FRESH COAST PLEIN AIRE PAINTING FESTIVAL ANNOUNCED

The City of Marquette announces the inaugural “Fresh Coast Plein Air Painting Festival”. The
festival will occur on Friday, June 30 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. A special public reception and viewing
will be held from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Iron Bay Restaurant and Drinkery. Prizes of $2,000 will
be awarded, including Best of Show, First Place, Second Place, Honorable Mentions and People’s
Choice.
Plein Aire painting is done outdoors in the “open air” and artists may paint at any Marquette outdoor
location, from Founder’s Landing to Presque Isle Park, along the shore or in town. Paintings must
illustrate or be inspired by real-life scenes and will be considered finished when returned for judging.
Artists may pre-register by email at: arts-culture@mqtcty.org or on the day of the event. Check-in is
7 a.m. at the Peter White Public Library located at 217 N. Front Street. Artists must have
canvases/substrates stamped at check-in and may submit up to two paintings at the end of the day to
be judged. Artists may bring frames for pieces to be judged if desired but this is not required. A
registration fee of $25 is due at check-in. Further details, including a map of the Marquette area and
list of painting sites, sheltered areas, and public restroom facilities will also be available at check-in.
The Fresh Coast Plein Aire Painting Festival is presented by Travel Marquette. Additional sponsors
include the Iron Bay Restaurant and Drinkery, Beth Millner Jewelry, Zero Degrees Gallery, the
Marquette Downtown Development Authority, the Lake Superior Art Association and Studio Gallery
of Kathleen Conover and Yvonne Lemire.

Construction at Founders Landing has started for the new pier project. Effective immediately, the boardwalk at Founders Landing and the City multi-use path between Spring Street and the trail intersection near the Lakeshore Boulevard and US 41 intersection will be closed to through traffic. The closure is required to accommodate construction work on the City South Pier project and for building construction at the Two Marquette Place development.Multi-use path traffic will be detoured around this area by means of the sidewalk along Front Street/US 41.
