Cleanup efforts are ongoing along Lakeshore Blvd. The road will remain closed until flooding subsides and debris is removed. We ask the public to please refrain from walking or biking in that area during the cleanup. Update on updates to curbside garbage and recycling collection system

The new City of Marquette solid waste contract for curbside collection of garbage and recycling took effect Oct. 1. The new contract offers a hybrid system where the customers may choose between continuing to use the current green bag system or the new cart system. The City developed an informational order form for those customers switching to carts. Customers will remain on the green bag system unless they turn in the order form. The order forms are being included in City utility bills. Order forms should be returned to the City when the customer pays their bill. Order forms must be turned in by the end of November. Carts are expected to be distributed during January of 2018.
The actual 64-gallon carts and 96-gallon carts can be seen on the first floor of City Hall, at 300 W. Baraga Ave. and at the new Municipal Service Center, at 1100 Wright St. A sample 48-gallon cart has been requested but is not yet available. The cart manufacturer will be Cascade out of Grand Rapids. The manufacturer will deliver the residential carts to the individual residences.

Now Accepting Applications For Marquette Public Art Commission

The Marquette City Commission recently adopted a Public Art Policy. The City recognizes that the inclusion of art in appropriate capital improvement projects in the City will promote its cultural heritage and artistic development, enhance the City’s character and identity, contribute to economic development and tourism, add warmth, dignity, beauty and accessibility to spaces accessible to the public, and expand the experience and participation of citizens with the arts. The adopted policy established a Public Art Commission and made funding available to support the inclusion of works of art in public spaces in the City. At this time, the City of Marquette is seeking residents to serve on the Marquette Public Art Commission (MPAC). The seven-member volunteer oversight body will be responsible for developing guidelines and administering the new Policy.

The MPAC will be made up of seven regular members appointed by the City Commission, of which at least four members must be art professionals (artist, performing artist, architect, landscape architect, curator, arts writer, arts educator, arts administrator or individual with a college level degree in an art field). The three remaining members simply require an interest in public art and commitment to our community. All members will meet the board and committee membership requirements set forth in the City Charter and will serve staggered three-year terms.

Applications are available on the City website at www.marquettemi.gov/committeeapplication or in the City Manager’s Office located at 300 W. Baraga Ave. The City Commission will begin reviewing applications starting in December to begin the selection process; however, applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis. Please call 228-0472 or email arts-culture@marquettemi.gov for more information.
