Sister Cities Partnership Hosts Higashiomi Delegation

With a 13-hour time difference, over 6,000 miles and more than 22 hours of travel time between us, one might say Higashiomi, Japan is more than a “hop, skip and jump” away!

Join us for a welcoming community reception at the Huron Gallery, Peter White Library on Aug. 29 between 6 and 8 p.m. Our seven delegates represent the many facets of Higashiomi. Your presence will help convey the warm and inviting community we have in Marquette. Following a short program, enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres by Copper Crust Co. The Marquette Area Sister Cities Partnership Committee is proud to host the events for the Sister City delegation. The Japanese delegation is being led by Hitoki Taguchi.

Additionally, the community is invited and encouraged to welcome our guests when they arrive at Sawyer International Airport, August 26 at 8:20 p.m. Both events are free to the public.

Nineteenth annual holiday art sale – call to artists

The Marquette Regional History Center and the City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center are proud to announce the 2018 Holiday Art Sale, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This holiday sale is open to all media: painting, photography, fibers, glass, jewelry, metals, wearable art, etc.

Artwork for sale must be made by the artist. This is a juried show that will not accept any kit, import, country craft or resale items. To be considered, artists must submit the following: completed application, self-addressed stamped envelope, six images of their artwork and the application fee.

Please mail images along with the application and payment to the Marquette Regional History Museum at 145 West Spring Street. Email submissions and incomplete applications will not be accepted. The application deadline is Friday, Sept. 14. Failure to abide by the above criteria will result in immediate disqualification. We cannot guarantee any artist that they will be receiving the same booth location as in previous years. At this time there will be no double booths granted. Rejected applicants’ check or cash will be sent back by self-addressed envelope.

Phase 3 of Presque Isle Avenue Reconstruction

The third phase of the Presque Isle Avenue reconstruction project will begin at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, August 20. The third phase will include the east half of the street from Center Street to a point north of Fair Avenue. The west half will be open to two-way traffic. This is the third phase of four phases with this phase expected to last three weeks.

The Presque Isle Avenue work will detour truck traffic from Presque Isle Avenue to Fair Avenue, Lakeshore Boulevard, Wright Street, and back on to Presque Isle Avenue. This detour route is only for truck traffic and will remain this way for the duration of the project. Local truck deliveries for businesses along Presque Isle Avenue from Wright Street to Fair Avenue will have access to this area. Businesses in this area are open and patrons will have access to them.

Traffic will experience lane shifts at each end of this phase. The public is advised to use caution when traveling through this area and to be alert for construction, detour and advisory signing.

A phasing schematic can be accessed at the City of Marquette Engineering Division web site under the Presque Isle Avenue Reconstruction Project link at www.marquettemi.gov. Hebert Construction Company is the general contractor for this project.

NAMI Walk

On Saturday, August 18, 2018, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and continuing through 12:00 noon, NAMI will be hosting a community walk.

Walkers will start at Mattson Lower Harbor Park, then proceed north on the multi-use path to Shiras Park and return along the same route.

The walk is to occur exclusively on the on the multi-use path and participants are to follow the rules of the road, however the public is asked to be aware of and be considerate toward people crossing the streets.

Classic Car Auto Show

A classic car auto show will be held on Third Street on Saturday, August 18, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The following streets will be closed to through traffic on Saturday, August 18, 2018 from 7:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.:

Third Street from Michigan Street to Park Street
Ohio Street from Front Street to Fourth Street
Hewitt Avenue from Front Street to Fourth Street
Prospect Street from Front Street to Fourth Street
Crescent Street from Front Street to Fourth Street

Traffic will be detoured using Michigan Street, Fourth Street and Magnetic Street.

Presque Isle Avenue Reconstruction – Short Closure for Sanitary Sewer Work

Beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, August 13, 2018 Presque Isle Avenue between Summit
Street and Wright Street will be closed to through traffic for sanitary sewer work near the
Summit Street intersection. Duration of this closure will be short, and plans are to have it open
by 11:00 a.m. that same day.

The Presque Isle Avenue work will detour traffic to down Summit Street, Fitch Street, and
Wright Street. The public is advised to use caution when traveling through this area and to be
alert for construction, detour and advisory signing.

Hebert Construction is the general contractor for this project.

Lincoln Avenue disruptions and closures

Beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 Oberstar, Inc. will be removing
partial sections of curbing and proceeding with sanitary sewer lateral replacement on
Lincoln Avenue from College Avenue to Center Street. This work is the prerequisite for
the milling and overlaying for this street. This work will be done with intermediate road
closures and the public is urged to use extreme caution and follow all warning signs, lane
shifts, and other traffic control measures. The work is expected to last three weeks for
this phase of the project. Additional announcements will be forthcoming for mill and
overlay activities.
