Household Rubbish and Compost site opening

Extra days have been added to the first two weeks to assist in spring cleaning. The site is open from 3 to 7 p.m. (or when capacity is met) on April 22, 23, 24, 25, 29, and 30, as well as May 1 and 2.

The City of Marquette’s Household Rubbish and Compost site will open April 22.

The Household Rubbish site, located at 1415 Pioneer Road, is a site for City residents paying the “solid waste” fee to dispose of household items too large for curbside pickup. The daily capacity of this site is regulated by the MDEQ and once capacity is met, the site will close, without exception.

The site is opening Monday, April 22 and will be open Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m., as well as on the second Saturday of each month from 1 to 4 p.m. Again, the site may close early on any day if capacity is met.

Regular hours will begin May 6.

The Compost site, also located at 1415 Pioneer Road, is opening Tuesday, May 4 and will be open each Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Residents must bring a photo ID and a current City water bill showing a “solid waste” fee payment to enter both sites.

Public Art Commission – additional meeting

The Marquette Public Art Commission has scheduled an additional meeting for Wednesday, April 17. This meeting will include agenda items not addressed at previous meeting April 10. The meeting, which will take place in the City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center located in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library, will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Presque Isle and Cinder Pond launches opening April 12

The Presque Isle and Cinder Pond Boat Launches will be open beginning Friday, April 12. However, the Presque Isle Marina and Cinder Pond Marina will remain closed until May 1.

The City of Marquette requires all boaters to obtain a launch permit to launch a boat at Presque Isle and Cinder Pond. Seasonal launch permits are available for purchase at Lakeview Arena Parks and Recreation office, located at 401 E. Fair Ave., the City of Marquette’s Treasurer’s office located at 300 W. Baraga Ave. The cost is $60 per seasonal launch permit, and $15 for an additional launch permit (restrictions apply). Daily launch permits are $6 and are available in the red launch boxes located and Presque Isle and Cinder Pond Marina launch areas.

City offices closed April 19

City offices located at Marquette City Hall, 300 W. Baraga Avenue; the Lakeview Arena, 401 E. Fair Avenue; the Arts and Culture Center, 217 N. Front St. (in the Peter White Public Library); and the Municipal Service Center, 1100 Wright Street, will be closed on Friday, April 19, in observance of Good Friday.

Marquette Police, Fire, and Public Works and Utilities will remain fully operational during this time.

Phase 1 of Third Street work to begin April 15

Beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday, April 15, Third Street between Baraga Avenue and Rock Street will be closed to through traffic for Phase 1 reconstruction work. This is the first phase of two phases. This phase is expected to last four weeks.

The Third Street work will detour traffic to Baraga Avenue, Fourth Street and Rock Street. The public is advised to use caution when traveling through this area and to be alert for construction, detour and advisory signing.

A phasing schematic can be accessed at the City of Marquette Engineering Division web site under the Third Street Reconstruction Project link at www.marquettemi.gov.

Oberstar, Inc. is the general contractor for this project.

Spring Street closure set for April 12-14

Beginning at 5 p.m. on April 12 and continuing through 5 p.m. on April 14, Spring Street will be closed to motor vehicles between Front Street and Third Street for the sixth annual Festival of the Angry Bear, sponsored by the Ore Dock Brewing Company.

No detour will be provided.

Egress from the MarqTran drive through and the Marquette History Museum will be available at the west end of Spring Street.

Angeli to hold office hours

Marquette City Manager Mike Angeli will hold his next community office hours on Wednesday, April 10, from 10 a.m. to noon in the main floor conference room of the Peter White Public Library. The meeting is intended to provide an informal opportunity to discuss issues within the community, and to give citizens the opportunity for direct dialogue with City staff about interests and concerns.
