Derek Griffin, New Hire

Derek Griffin has been hired as a new Police Officer effective Monday, October 14th. Derek has a bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan University (NMU) in Criminal Justice. He also obtained his MCOLES certification from NMU’s Police Academy in August of 2019. Prior to working for the City, Derek had been a Police Officer for Chocolay Township. Johnson, Kyle website

Kyle Johnson, Promotion

Kyle Johnson, Heavy Equipment Operator in Public Works, has successfully posted to the Special Equipment Operator position in the Water Distribution division. Kyle has his CDL- A and S-4 certification. He was hired by the City in June of 2004 as a Heavy Equipment Operator. Prior to joining the City, Kyle had worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for Cliffs for eight years. Kyle will start his new position on Oct. 21. He is replacing Randy Bullock who has posted to the Meter Service Technician position.

Brugman, Todd website

Todd Brugman, Retirement

Todd Brugman, Meter Service Technician in the Water Distribution division of Public Works, will be retiring with 25 years of service on Thursday, October 17th. Todd attended Northern Michigan University where he received a certification in Auto Body Repair. He worked as a construction laborer for Closner Construction before being hired as a Laborer in Public Works in 1994. He worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator in Water Distribution for several years before posting to the position of Meter Service Crew Leader in 2012. In addition to his CDL-A, Todd holds an S-4 certification from the MDEQ.

457 Day

A 457 Deferred Compensation Plan allows public employees to defer some of their current income.  These contributions and earnings grow tax-free until they are withdrawn.  Distributions can be taken when you leave City employment or the year you reach age 70½, if still employed.  This plan is open to all full-time and regular part-time employees of the City of Marquette.

Representatives will meet with you to enroll you in a plan, or if you are already a participant, to discuss your investment options and any changes you may wish to make. You direct which fund(s) to invest in, and taxes on earnings are deferred until the funds are withdrawn.  Saving is made simple by authorizing an automatic pre-tax deduction from your paycheck. 

This is the only time this year representatives will be here at the City of Marquette.  Appointments must be scheduled through Human Resources.  Appointments are limited to 15 minutes per employee.  If you need a longer appointment, please schedule the appointment outside of your work hours.

Larson, Ava Square Version 2019

Ava Larson, Internship

Ava Larson will begin her internship at the Arts & Culture Office on September 4th through May 26. Ava is a senior at Marquette Senior High School and she plans on attending Northern Michigan University next fall. Ava’s internship is through MARESA and she will be working 10 hours a week learning marketing and promotions, exhibit installation, and basic office administration under the supervision of Community Service Manager, Tiina Harris.

Medicare Advantage Renewal

The City has received its 2020 renewal for our Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage Plan. Unlike our other health insurance plans, Medicare Advantage plans renew on a calendar year basis. This year we received the good news that there will be no increase in the premium for the plan year. The monthly premium for a single plan will remain at $433.75 for health and prescription drug coverage through Dec. 31, 2020.

Randy Bullock, Transfer

Randy Bullock, Special Equipment Operator in the Water Distribution division of the Public Works Department, has successfully posted to the position of Meter Service Technician effective Oct. 21. Randy holds a Class A CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements as well as his S-3 and S-4 certifications. Randy has worked for the City for the past 16 years, the last three as a Special Equipment Operator. Prior to that, he had worked in the construction industry and owned his own sewer and drain cleaning company for several years. Randy will be replacing Todd Brugman, who is retiring on Oct. 18.
