Small traffic loop at Presque Isle open

Effective immediately, the small loop near the breakwall at Presque Isle Park will be opened to vehicle traffic. The main loop around the island will remain closed to vehicle traffic. The road between Moosewood Nature Center and the Presque Isle Pavilion will also remain closed. The entire island will remain open to pedestrian traffic.

Applications available for City Commission vacancy

Applications are now available for City residents seeking appointment to the vacant seat on the Marquette City Commission.

Applications are available via the City website (here). The deadline for applications is 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 9.

Under the Marquette City Charter, “vacancies in elective offices shall, within 60 days, be filled for the unexpired term of the officer whose office has become vacant, by appointment by a majority vote of the members of the city commission then in office of a person possessing the qualifications for the office.”

Water meter endpoint replacements continuing

Johnson Controls & Itron will be continuing to conduct exterior endpoint replacements at various residential and business locations throughout the city. This is related to the water meter replacement project and is part of the final punch list necessary to complete the project. Both companies meet the essential infrastructure requirements and are authorized by the State of Michigan to continue performing services.

All work will occur on the exterior of the building. No interior work is required. Itron workers will have company identification and their work vehicles will have Itron logos.

Nominating petition packets available for 2020 BLP, City Commission seats

The Marquette City Clerk’s office is now accepting nominating petitions for the City elective offices to be filled this year. There will be two vacancies on the Marquette Board of Light and Power and three vacancies on the Marquette City Commission.

Packets containing nominating petition forms, the required certificates and information sheets are available from the City Clerk’s Office. Due to the cautionary public health measures implemented by the Governor (Executive Order 2020-21), these materials will not be available for pick-up in person. In order to obtain nominating forms and related documents, residents must contact the City Clerk’s Office by email at clerk@marquettemi.gov or via telephone at 906-225-8667. This communication must include the person’s name, address and contact information; application materials will then be mailed to interested parties.

The deadline for filing nominating petitions is 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21. To be eligible to run for office in the City of Marquette, candidates must have been residents of the City for at least one year, and may not be in debt to the City.

If a sufficient number of candidates file, a primary election for the BLP and City Commission will be held on Aug. 4, 2020. Candidates moving on from the primary will then be on the Nov. 3, 2020 ballot.

Work resumes on Hawley Street storm drain relocation project

Bacco Construction Inc. will be resuming work on the Hawley Street Storm drain relocation project on March 30. Hawley Street will remain open to through traffic. Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to use caution when traveling through this area. A May 15 completion date is anticipated for this project.

Virtual event listings available through Marquette365 Calendar

The City of Marquette Arts & Culture Division invites the community to utilize the Marquette365 community calendar to upload and share virtual and online events going on amidst the stay-at-home order issued by the State of Michigan.

Marquette365.com, originally a product of the Marquette Chamber of Commerce, is now managed and operated by the City of Marquette Arts & Culture Division of Community Services. This free resource is a one-stop shop for all events going on in Marquette County, including festivals, arts & culture events, performances, meetings and special events. The Division recently added an “Online & Streaming” event category to consolidate and promote events going on in the area that are accessible from home, including online classes, live-streamed concerts and performances and other experiences.

Event hosts are encouraged to create a free account and upload events as they arise. Arts & Culture Staff are available to assist with any questions in regard to setting up an account, getting events uploaded, and further promotion of events. March 30 City Commission meeting: Public Participation Details

Due to Executive Order 2020-21, the March 30 City Commission meeting will be held virtually and City Commissioners and staff will attend remotely through Zoom video conferencing.

This meeting will be streamed on Channel 191 and on the City of Marquette YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/CityofMarquetteGov). Please note that the YouTube livestream will have at least a 20 second delay.

Public Participation

There will be three options for public participation in this meeting: video conferencing, phone conferencing or written comment. There will be two public comment periods for the meeting, one at the beginning and one at the end. Comments will be limited to three minutes and speakers must give their name and address. Written comments will be limited to 500 words.

Members of the public wishing to make a video comment will need to visit https://us04web.zoom.us/j/569931650 on a computer or smart device that has a camera. 

Members of the public wishing to call in and make a comment over the phone will need to call 253-215-8782 and enter the meeting ID (569 931 650)

When participating via video or phone conferencing, you will be placed into a virtual lobby/on-hold until the Public Comment portions of the meetings are reached. Once Public Comment begins, the Mayor will go through the list and provide each commenter with the opportunity to address the Commission. It is recommended that participants follow the meeting on Channel 191 or YouTube to know when the Public Comment portion is occurring and to be ready to make their comment.

The video and phone conference lobby will open at 5:50 p.m. on March 30.

Written comments can be submitted using the form at www.marquettemi.gov/publiccomment/ or directly to shobbins@marquettemi.gov. Written submissions will be accepted until 4 p.m. on Monday, March 30.

April 7 Planning Commission meeting canceled

The City of Marquette Planning Commission regular meeting scheduled for April 7 has been canceled. The following cases will be moved to the April 21, 2020, regular meeting:

  • 04-SUP-04-20 – 1009 W. Bluff Street (PIN: 0260790): PTA Properties and Verizon Wireless are seeking a Special Land Use permit for a wireless communications tower facility (40-ft high monopole tower and equipment platform) located at 1009 W. Bluff Street. 
  • 05-SUP-04-20 – 351 W. Washington Street (PIN: 0220120): Logan Stauber and The Preserve, LLC are seeking a Special Land Use permit for a Marihuana Retailer located at 351 W. Washington Street.

PWPL board to hold special meeting on March 27

The Board of Trustees of the Peter White Public Library will hold a special meeting on Friday, March 27, at 6:00 pm, to discuss the Library’s COVID-19 response. Because of social distancing guidelines, this meeting will be held virtually via Zoom.

Effective March 7, 2020, Firefighter Kevin Serkowsi has been promoted to Relief Engineer. Kevin was hired as a Firefighter/ Paramedic on July 2, 2016. Kevin has a bachelor’s degree in Fire Science and an associate degree in Paramedic Technology from Lake Superior State University. Prior to joining the Marquette Fire Department, he was a Paramedic with Kinross Emergency Medical Services in Kincheloe, MI.
