Effective March 7, 2020, Firefighter Kevin Serkowsi has been promoted to Relief Engineer. Kevin was hired as a Firefighter/ Paramedic on July 2, 2016. Kevin has a bachelor’s degree in Fire Science and an associate degree in Paramedic Technology from Lake Superior State University. Prior to joining the Marquette Fire Department, he was a Paramedic with Kinross Emergency Medical Services in Kincheloe, MI.

Micah Heath, New Hire

Micah Heath has been hired as a Patrol Officer in the Police Department effective March 16, 2020. Micah has an associate degree in Criminal Justice from Finlandia University and obtained his MCOLES certification from NMU’s Police Academy in August of 2019. Prior to being hired by the City, Micah worked as a Patrol Officer for the Menominee Police Department and for Finlandia University Security.

BLP meeting closed to foot traffic; public comment still available

The Marquette Board of Light and Power Board Meeting scheduled for March 24th at 4:30pm will be closed to public foot traffic in order to comply with requirements recently established throughout the State of Michigan.

Prior to the meeting, residents wishing to submit public comments, can do so by emailing mblp_general_info@mblp.org. All comments will be read into the public record during the meeting’s normal public comment period. Written comments must be submitted no later than 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday March 24th.

When submitting public comment, please include your first and last name, as well as your full address. Additionally please limit submissions to 500 words or less, as the three-minute speaking time limit will still be in effect.

Residents can also call into the meeting to offer public comment. Those interested in speaking during either public comment period should call in advance utilizing the following information:

City operations closing to the public

Due to Executive Order 2020-21, beginning Tuesday, March 24, all City facilities will be closed to the public. This includes City Hall, the Municipal Service Center, Fire Stations 1 and 2, the Police Department, Lakeview Arena, the Senior Center, the Wastewater Treatment Plant, and the Water Treatment Plant. Presque Isle Park will be closed to vehicular traffic, however pedestrian traffic is still permissible. City announcements and Commission agendas will be sent to local media and will be available online.

City operations will continue, however the City will be operating at reduced staffing levels for the duration of the Executive Order and phone availability will be limited. To contact the City about essential business, please prioritize electronic communication when possible. Contact information for each City Department is available at www.marquettemi.gov/departments/.

All non-essential meetings and gatherings remain canceled. This includes meetings of all City statutory and advisory boards and committees scheduled between now and April 13, unless the meetings are critical in nature. If a meeting is deemed critical in nature, City announcements will be sent at that time. This does not apply to City Commission meetings. Instructions on how to view and participate in the March 30 City Commission meeting will be published later this week.

For emergency services, please dial 911. For non-emergency police assistance, please dial 906-228-0400. The Police Department will be evaluating non-emergency calls and will dispatch services accordingly.
