In an effort to integrate public art into the day-to-day life of the community, the Marquette Public Art Commission (MPAC) will commission mural artwork to revitalize and refurbish the Hurley Park public basketball court facilities. The Queen City Courts project will introduce art onto the court’s playing surface to help increase park usage and attract players of ages and levels of experience, from families to students and adults. The community is invited to submit feedback on the proposed designs for the Queen City Courts mural that will adorn Hurley Park for years to come.
Fifty-two artists responded to the national call. The three finalists are well-respected in their fields, having national and international mural experience. With basic parameters in mind—it still needs to be a functional basketball court—the artists were given creative freedom to respond to the unique facets of our community, the sport of basketball itself, and add their distinct voice to a place that will celebrate public art and foster a love of outdoor play.
