Ohio Street Closure to Through Traffic

Ohio Street between Third Street and Fourth Street will be closed to through traffic Friday, August 6, 2021 for a fundraising event in front of Madgoodies Studio at 209 West Ohio Street. The closure will begin at 2:00 p.m. and the street will be reopened at 9:00 p.m. Access to residences on Ohio Street will maintained via Fourth Street. Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through this area.

Marquette City Manager Community Office Hours

Marquette City Manager Karen Kovacs will hold her next community office hours on Wednesday, August 11, from 10 a.m. to noon in the main floor conference room of the Peter White Public Library.  The meeting is intended to provide an informal opportunity to discuss issues within the community, and to give citizens the opportunity for direct dialogue with City staff about interests and concerns.

Fill the Boot - Thank You to the Community

This past weekend the City of Marquette Fire Department held its annual “Fill the Boot” fundraising drive benefitting the Muscular Dystrophy Association. During the two-day event, a total of $11,693.91 was raised. We would like to thank the public for their support and generosity towards this worthwhile cause. 

24th Annual City of Marquette Art Awards

Marquette Arts and Culture presents the 24th Annual Art Awards on Sunday, September 12, 2021. This red-carpet affair honors outstanding individuals who have made an impact in arts and culture in Marquette. The awards show will be held at Marquette Mountain Resort, 4501 M-553, Marquette MI.

At 5:00 p.m. the public is invited to a cocktail hour featuring a performance by TaMaMa Dance Co. Light refreshments will be provided, cash bar available.  At 6:00 p.m. the award show will be hosted in the Mountain Chalet with performances by select award recipients. This event is free and open to the public with a “Marquette Formal” suggested dress code to match the occasion. The Annual Art Awards will close out the new Art on the Mountain Art Fair, hosted by Art on the Rocks and Marquette Mountain.

DEO Gallery August Exhibit: New Realities


Marquette Arts and Culture announces the August Deo Gallery exhibition: “New Realities”. This exhibit will feature oil paintings by John Lundeen and mixed media sculptures by Wayne Francis.

John Lundeen grew up near Lake Superior, in Northern Wisconsin and has a professional background in Architecture. He received his degree in art in the 1960s and has been painting ever since. The eight paintings displayed in this exhibit are a part of his personal collection and not for sale.

Wayne Francis has a professional background in Art education and administration. He is now a full-time artist and musician and divides his time between Marquette Michigan and Pine Island Florida. His work delves into that magical, whimsical realm of the artist as interpreter of the human experience. His sculptures will be available for sale for the duration of the exhibition.

“New Realities” will be running from August 1 to August 27 with an artist reception on Thursday, August 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend and refreshments will be provided. Peter White Public Library will host their public artist receptions concurrently featuring artists John French in the Lower Level Reception Gallery and Paula Kiesling in the Huron Mountain Club Gallery.

The Deo Gallery is part of The City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center, located in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library.

July Promotions

The Human Resources/Benefits Coordinator position has effectively been removed from the City Hall bargaining unit with the addition of a new Fire Department Administrative Assistant position. With this change, Michelle Schroeder has been promoted to Human Resources Administrator, the converted exempt position. Michelle started with the City of Marquette as a Customer Account Clerk/Cashier in March of 2015 and promoted to HR/Benefits Coordinator in February of 2019.

Dunleavy, Tom Class A 10-29-20 website

Thomas Dunleavy, Retirement

Fire Marshal Tom Dunleavy has retired as of July 4th. Tom was originally hired by the City of Marquette
as a Firefighter in June of 1994. He was promoted through the ranks of Relief Engineer, Engineer,
Sergeant and to his most recent position as Captain/Fire Inspector in 2016, renamed to Fire Marshal as
of Oct. 2020. Congratulations, Tom!

June Postings/Resignations/Retirements


Sherry Sullivan was hired by the City in October 2020 and quickly moved to fill the vacancy as Utility Billing Clerk shortly thereafter. Sherry has transferred back to the Customer Account Clerk/Cashier position effective once the Utility Billing Clerk position has been filled, to fill the vacancy created by Amber LaMarre’s resignation.

Michelle Schroeder has posted for the Deputy Treasurer position with the vacancy created by Terra Bahrman’s promotion. Michelle started with the City of Marquette as a Customer Account Clerk/Cashier in March of 2015 and promoted to HR/Benefits Coordinator in February of 2019.

Andrew Taseris has been promoted to Meter Service Technician effective June 7th. Andrew has been with the City since
July 2018, originally hired on as a Heavy Equipment Operator.

Jim Fraley has been officially awarded the Special Equipment Operator position in Streets effective June 21st. Jim was
originally hired by the City in June of 2004 as a Heavy Equipment Operator.

Newly hired Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, Scott Dietrich, has resigned his position effective May 31. Scott just
joined the City of Marquette team early this year and left for personal reasons.

Amber LaMarre has resigned her position as Customer Account Clerk/Cashier. Her last day was June 15th. Amber left to spend time with her new son. Amber had been with the City for nearly four years.

Special Equipment Operator Dave Outinen has officially retired as of June 7th. Dave had been with the City of Marquette since October of 1990. Congratulations, Dave!

Kristina Calzetta, New Hire

Kristina Calzetta has joined the City of Marquette Police Department team as
Clerical Dispatcher effective June 14th. Kristina previously worked as Corporal –
Corrections Division for the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office. She has a bachelor’s degree from NMU
in Criminal Justice. Welcome, Kristina!
