Special City Commission meeting: Participation details

Due to Executive Orders issued from the Office of the Governor, the Aug. 19 joint meeting of Marquette City Commission and Marquette Township Board will be held without the public in physical attendance. The public is invited to view and participate in the meeting electronically.
The meeting will be streamed on YouTube starting at 4:15 p.m. The YouTube channel is located at www.youtube.com/user/CityofMarquetteGov. Please note that the livestreams may have at least a 20 second delay.
Public Participation
There will be two options for public participation in the meetings: phone conferencing or written comment. There will be two public comment periods during each meeting, one at the beginning and one at the end. Comments will be limited to three minutes and speakers must give their name and address.
Written comments will be limited to 500 words. Written comments can be submitted directly to shobbins@marquettemi.gov, written submissions will be accepted until noon on Wednesday, Aug. 19.

City budget meeting schedule and participation details

The City of Marquette’s Proposed Budget for Fiscal Year 2021 is now available online at www.marquettemi.gov/budget. Hard copies will be available at the City Clerk’s office in City Hall, at 300 W. Baraga Avenue. To schedule an opportunity to view a hard copy, please call 906-225-8657 and schedule an appointment.

Four special meetings of the City Commission have been scheduled in order to discuss the budget. The meetings will be held during the following dates and times:

  • August 12, 2020
  • August 17, 2020
  • August 19, 2020
  • August 24, 2020

All meetings will begin at 5:15 p.m., with the Commission and some staff physically present in Commission Chambers at City Hall.

Members of the public wishing to call in and make a comment over the phone will need to call 312-626-6799 and enter the meeting ID (814 5212 6232).

When participating via phone conferencing, you will be placed into a virtual lobby/on-hold until the Public Comment portions of the meetings are reached. Once Public Comment begins, the Mayor will go through each person waiting in the lobby one at a time and provide them with the opportunity to address the Commission. Though there may be a delay on the video feeds, it is recommended that participants follow the meeting on Channel 191 or YouTube to have an idea of when the Public Comment portion is occurring and that they be ready to make their comment. The phone conference lobby will open at 5:00 p.m.

Written comments can be submitted directly to shobbins@marquettemi.gov. Written submissions will be accepted until noon on the day of each meeting at which they are intended to be read.

Part of Lincoln Avenue to close Aug. 12 for work

Beginning at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, Lincoln Avenue between Washington Street and Bluff Street will be closed to through traffic to allow for curb replacement, sidewalk replacement and asphalt patching work by Oberstar, Inc. Traffic will be detoured by means of Garfield Avenue.

This is the prerequisite for the milling and re-paving of this street. The closure is expected to last up to three days. Additional announcements will be forthcoming for milling and re-paving activities.

The City of Marquette asks you for your patience during this process.

Scrap tire collection set for Aug. 13

The Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority has received a Scrap Tire Cleanup Grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. The collection is scheduled to take place at the Compost/Rubbish site located at 1415 Pioneer Road on Aug. 13 from 3 to 7 p.m.

All Marquette County residents may bring up to 10 tires at a time. Car and truck tires that are 22.5 inches in diameter or less (with or without rims) will be accepted at this collection. Larger tires, tractor tires and tires on split rims will NOT be accepted at this site. Please see the MCSWMA website at www.mcswma.com for more information on disposing of these types of tires.

Trash to Treasure Weekend planned

City of Marquette residents are invited and encouraged to participate in the community-wide “Trash to Treasure Weekend” beginning Friday, Aug. 14 at 5 p.m. through Sunday, Aug. 16 at 5 p.m.

The purpose of the program is to provide a venue for the recycling of reusable household items such as furniture, lamps, electronics and other working household items. The program is designed to increase awareness in recycling by creating a means of reusing items that would otherwise end up in the landfill.

GUIDELINES
Residents can place reusable/serviceable items in front of their house on the curb no earlier than 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14. Unclaimed items must be removed from the curb no later than 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16.

Removal of items will be strictly enforced in accordance with Section 22.33 of the City’s Nuisance Ordinance: It shall be unlawful for any person to accumulate rubbish or any articles or junk, except as may be necessary for construction work or normal course of a business.

This announcement will serve as notice that items left at the curb will be picked up by the Public Works Department and invoiced to the property owner on a time, material and disposal fee basis. College students are encouraged to participate in the treasure hunt in that they may find items which will be useful to them in their dormitory or apartment.

Examples of items that can be recycled include lamps, tables, chairs, dishes, etc.  Please, no rubbish.  Rubbish is defined to mean anything that does not work, is not clean and is not serviceable.

It is suggested that residents remove lawn ornaments and other wanted items to avoid mistaken identity.

Aug. 11 Ad-Hoc Housing Committee Meeting: Participation Details
