Blue Cross Extends Member Cost Support for COVID-19 Treatment

As we continue to deal with COVID-19 in our communities, Blue Cross and BCN are extending the timeframe for covering the member portion of costs for COVID-19 treatment for fully insured members through March 31, 2021.
Member costs for physician-approved COVID-19 tests and associated services are waived until the end of the public health emergency. This is part of a federal mandate that will continue as long as the mandate is in place.

Uniform Lieutenant Mark Wuori has announced his retirement upcoming on Jan. 17, 2021. Lt. Wuori was hired by the City on July 12, 1988 as a Patrol Officer after graduating from Lake Superior State University and the LSSU Police Academy. He was promoted to Uniform Corporal in 1997, to Sergeant in 2000 and again to Lieutenant in 2003. Lt. Wuori served on the Upper
Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team from 1994-1996. Congratulations, Mark!

Whitney Young has been hired as Customer Account Clerk/Cashier for the City effective Dec. 14. Whitney most recently worked as the Office Administrator for Getz’s Clothiers and nannied for local families and worked as a bank teller for Flagstar. Tyler Oja joined the City of Marquette as a Heavy Equipment Operator effective Dec. 7, 2020. Tyler most recently worked for Mark Honkala Logging as an Operator/Laborer and prior to that worked as a Staff Forester
for Compass Land Consultants, Inc., Northern Energy Solutions and PK Contracting. Tyler has a Bachelor of Science degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Management from NMU. Welcome, Tyler!

Travis Aho is welcomed as a newly hired Heavy Equipment Operator with the City effective Nov. 30, 2020. Travis has an Associate’s degree in Industrial Maintenance from Northern Michigan University and most recently worked for the USPS as a City Carrier Assistant. City Manager Letter of Intent to Retire

On December 1st, City Manager Mike Angeli provided to the Mayor and City Commission his letter of intent to retire on May 31, 2021. At December 14th’s City Commission meeting, the Mayor appointed a subcommittee of three City Commissioners be formed to develop a process to use for filling the upcoming vacancy. The subcommittee will then be able to review options for the process and put forward a recommendation for approval by the full Commission. The Director will be working with the subcommittee throughout the process.

City Attorney Retirement & Appointment

On November 10, City Attorney Ron Keefe notified the City Commission that he will be stepping down as City Attorney and that his final day in office will be December 31, 2020. He and his law partner Suzanne Larsen have been providing legal services to the City for the last 15 years. On Monday, Nov. 30, the City Commission approved the appointment of Suzanne Larsen to the position of City Attorney effective Jan. 1, 2021. Ms. Larsen and the rest of the attorneys at Kendricks, Bordeau, Keefe, Seavoy & Larsen, PC remain committed to providing the same quality legal services the City is used to
receiving from the law firm.

Amelia Pruiett has been hired as the Marketing and Promotions Assistant in the Arts & Culture Center effective Oct. 26, 2020. Prior to being hired by the City, Amelia was employed at Getz’s Clothiers and has varied

Eric Paupore has been hired as the Planning/Zoning Technician in the Community Development Department effective Nov. 2, 2020. Eric has a B.S. in Criminal Justice in addition to a B.A. in English from Northern
Michigan University. Prior to joining the City’s team, Eric was a U.S. Park Ranger – Visitor and Resource Protection – for Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and prior to that worked as an Investigator for Child
