The City of Marquette will begin rolling out new recycling carts for residents next week as it officially launches its carted “single-stream” collection service.

With the single stream recycling program, sorting recyclable items is not necessary; residents are able to place all recyclable items directly into a new, larger recycling container. The 64-gallon carts will begin arriving at residents’ homes starting September 12th. The carts will replace the smaller bins currently used for residential recycling and come with wheels for easy maneuvering and attached lids to keep recyclables dry and secure.

The City applied for and received grants from Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and The Recycling Partnership, a nonprofit organization that works with city governments nationwide to transform their recycling programs. The City of Marquette was selected to receive grant support because of its dedication to advancing recycling in the community. The grants from EGLE and The Recycling Partnership, with support from the American Beverage’s Every Bottle Back initiative, will provide 6,100 new carts and includes funding for education and outreach about the new collection process.

The City of Marquette asks that residents continue to do their part by placing only recyclable materials in their carts, including aluminum and steel cans, paper products (including newspapers and flattened cardboard), and empty plastic bottles and containers. Glass will not be collected curbside but is eligible for recycling through drop off locations only. Glass drop-off locations include Waste Management at 910 W. Baraga Ave. and The Municipal Service Center at 1100 Wright Street. To help limit contamination, give food, and drink containers a quick rinse and then place them directly into the recycling cart—no sorting needed.

Some items that cannot be recycled include plastic bags, film plastics, paper towels, electrical equipment, batteries, and clothing. These items often get mixed into recycling carts because of “wishcycling,” or the hope that they can be recycled. While well-intentioned, non-recyclable items cause serious issues.

Marquette City Manager Karen Kovacs will hold her next community office hours on Wednesday, September 14 from 10 a.m. to noon in the main floor conference room of the Peter White Public Library.  The meeting is intended to provide an informal opportunity to discuss issues within the community, and to give citizens the opportunity for direct dialogue with City staff about interests and concerns.

On Thursday, September 8th, from 6-8 p.m., the City of Marquette Office of Arts and Culture will host the opening reception for the September Deo Gallery Exhibit: Sunrises and Wild Places. Sunrises and Wild Places feature the local landscape photography by Cameron Wilcox. This stunning collection of scenery may feel familiar as Wilcox’s work is often featured by NMU, Travel Marquette, Lake Superior Magazine, and other notable publications; or perhaps, because the body of work captures the incredible natural spaces that we inhabit.

The Deo Gallery is located in the basement of the PWPL in the City’s Arts & Culture Center; it is curated monthly by the Lake Superior Art Association. The Deo Gallery’s exhibit will be up through September 1 through September 30^. Receptions are free and open to the public. Light refreshments are provided. Artist talk will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Peter White Drive will be closed to through traffic on Thursday, September 8 beginning at 6:30 a.m. for paving. This project is expected to be completed by 11:00 a.m.

As part of an ongoing City Street Improvement Project, Payne & Dolan, Inc. will begin asphalt resurfacing on Monday, September 12, 2022.  This process involves milling or pulverizing existing asphalt surfaces followed by repaving.  The following streets are included in this project: 

1. East Nicolet Boulevard – Nicolet Boulevard to Allouez Street
2. McClellan Avenue – Ridge Street to Cleveland Avenue
3. Sugarloaf Avenue – Wright Street to 160’ north of Powder Mill Drive
4. Bluff Street – Lincoln Avenue to Morgan Street
5. Center Street – Wilkinson Avenue to East Dead End
6. West Kaye Avenue – West of Lincoln

This work is expected to occur intermittently over the next 4 weeks. Vehicular and pedestrian access to homes will be maintained.  The work will be completed by means of short duration road closures, road detours, and flag control.  The public is urged to use extreme caution and follow all traffic control measures.

The seasonal portion of Peter White Drive in Presque Isle Park will be closed to vehicular traffic on Thursday, September 8th from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for a Marquette Area Public Schools cross country meet.

The offices of the Marquette Board of Light and Power will be closed Monday, September 5, 2022 in observance of Labor Day.

The Thursday, September 8 Marquette Downtown Development Authority Board Meeting is canceled due to lack of agenda items. The next regular meeting of the Marquette Downtown Development Authority Board is scheduled for Thursday, October 13 at the Marquette Commons, 112 S. Front St. in Downtown Marquette.

City of Marquette residents are invited and encouraged to participate in the community-wide “Trash to Treasure Weekend” beginning Friday, September 9 at 5:00 p.m. through Sunday, September 11 at 5:00 p.m.

The purpose of the program is to provide a venue for the recycling of reusable household items such as furniture, lamps, electronics, and other working household items. The program is designed to increase awareness of “reduce, reuse, recycle” by creating an alternative means of reusing items that would otherwise end up in the landfill.

GUIDELINES

Residents can place reusable/serviceable items in front of their house on the curb no earlier than 5:00 p.m. Friday, September 9. Unclaimed items must be removed from the curb no later than 5:00 p.m. Sunday, September 11.

Removal of items will be strictly enforced in accordance with Section 22.33 of the City’s Nuisance Ordinance: It shall be unlawful for any person to accumulate rubbish or any articles or junk, except as may be necessary for construction work or normal course of a business. This public service announcement will serve as notice of violation for items left at the curb.

College students are encouraged to participate in the treasure hunt in that they may find items which will be useful to them in their dormitory or apartment.

Examples of items that can be recycled include lamps, tables, chairs, dishes, etc. Please, no rubbish. Rubbish is defined to mean anything that does not work, is not clean and is not serviceable.

Depositing unwanted items is prohibited. Once an item is in your possession it is your responsibility.

It is suggested that residents remove lawn ornaments and other wanted items to avoid mistaken identity.
