Marquette City Manager Community Office Hours

Marquette City Manager Karen Kovacs will hold her next community office hours on Wednesday, December 13 from 10 a.m. to noon in the Shiras Room, on the top level of Peter White Public Library (Front Street side).  The meeting is intended to provide an informal opportunity to discuss issues within the community, and to give citizens the opportunity for direct dialogue with City staff about interests and concerns.

'Color Memories' Exhibit Opening Reception Canceled

The opening artist reception scheduled for Thursday, December 14, from 6-8 p.m. has been canceled due to artist availability.

The exhibit will be on display through January 27, 2024. The Deo Gallery is open to the public, free to visit, and accessible during regular library hours. The Deo Gallery is managed by the City of Marquette and is located in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library in the City’s Arts & Culture Center; it is supported by the Lake Superior Art Association.

The Deo Gallery: Ginnie Cappaert, Color Memories
The exhibit is a meditative exploration of abstract landscapes, using over 40 layers of pigment with oil paints, cold wax, and marble dust to capture the essence of nature and changing seasons. Cappaert now owns and operates a studio and gallery of her work in Egg Harbor, WI. She lived in the U.P. for over thirty years. DDA Holiday Parade

DDA HOLIDAY PARADE

Beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 8, the Marquette Downtown Development Authority will be hosting the annual Holiday Parade.  The parade will start at the Berry Events parking lot and exit on to Pine Street.  The parade will then proceed south on Pine Street to Fair Avenue, then west on Fair Avenue to Third Street, then south on Third Street to its conclusion at Third Street & Baraga Avenue.

The following street will be closed to all traffic from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m:

  • Third Street from Bluff Street to Spring Street.

The following streets will be closed to through traffic from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m:

  • Washington Street from Front Street to Third Street
  • Washington Street from Third Street to Fourth Street
  • Main Street from Front Street to Third Street
  • Jackson Cut Alley from Fourth Street to Main Street
  • Bluff Street Alley from Front Street to Third Street

The streets will re-open upon conclusion of the parade at approximately 7:30 p.m.  

DDA Informational Meeting Announcement

The Marquette Downtown Development Authority will be making an informational presentation at the December 14, 2023 regular meeting of the Downtown Development Authority Board of Directors. The meeting will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Marquette Commons, 112 S. Third Street, Marquette, MI 49855. The purpose of this presentation is to inform the Board, taxing jurisdictions, and the general public of the Authority’s accomplishments of the past year and the goals and projects to be undertaken in the coming year.

Pursuant to Michigan Public Act 57 of 2018, this presentation will fulfill the second of two informational meeting requirements for the 2023 calendar year.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING

Notice is hereby given that the Board of Review, City of Marquette will meet on December 12, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. at City Hall, Commission Chambers, 300 W. Baraga Ave, Marquette, MI for the following purposes.

  1. Request for current year only for poverty exemptions, but not poverty exemptions denied by the March or July Board of Review.
  2. Correct clerical errors or mutual mistake of facts.

All required forms and documentation shall be received five days prior to said meeting.

Opening Reception for 'Color Memories' Exhibit

On Thursday, December 14, from 6-8 p.m. the City of Marquette Office of Arts and Culture will be hosting the opening reception for ‘Color Memories’ by Ginnie Cappaert to be displayed in the Deo Gallery. The Deo Gallery is owned by the City of Marquette and is located in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library in the City’s Arts & Culture Center; it is supported by the Lake Superior Art Association. Light refreshments provided. Receptions are free and open to the public. Exhibits are accessible during regular library hours and will be on display through January 27, 2024.

Winter Property Tax Bills

Winter tax bills totaling approximately $2 million dollars will be mailed to Marquette City property owners on November 30, 2023.   Tax collection begins December 1, 2023 and payments are accepted at the City Treasurer’s office without penalty through February 14, 2024.   A penalty of 3% is added to the winter tax bill on February 15, 2024.  On March 1, 2024, taxes are delinquent and are transferred to the County Treasurer for collection.

The 2023 winter property tax bill represents millage levies for Marquette County Transit, County Aging, County Medical Care Facility, County Dispatch, County Rescue, and County Veterans’ Affairs.
