Phase 2 work to begin on Fifth Street project

Beginning at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, July 10, Fifth Street between Baraga Avenue and Fisher Street will be closed to through traffic for Phase 2 reconstruction work. This is the second phase of this two-phase project. This phase is expected to last six weeks.

The Fifth Street work will detour traffic to Spring Street, Altamont Street and Fisher Street. The public is advised to use caution when traveling through this area and to be alert for construction, detour and advisory signing.

A phasing schematic can be accessed at the City of Marquette Engineering Division web site under the Fifth Street Reconstruction Project link at

Smith Construction Company is the general contractor for this project.

City of Marquette - Municipal Government

The City of Marquette recently underwent a study in an effort for long term energy and cost savings as well as the efficiency and direction of vehicle traffic. Beginning this month the following changes will be made:

1. Addition of left turn arrow signals at Lincoln Avenue and
West Washington Street, both east and west.

2. Addition of left turn arrow signals at West Washington
Street and McClellan Avenue, all directions (north, south,
east and west).

3. Addition of directional traffic signals at North McClellan
Avenue and West Ridge Street.

4. Removal of directional traffic signals at North Front Street
and Hewitt Avenue and replaced with a 4 way stop. A traffic
control at this intersection was found to be not warranted,
but a 4 way stop will be added anyway for additional safety
in the school zone.
