Labor Day Weekend Compost and Rubbish Site Closure

The Compost drop-off site located at 1415 Pioneer Rd., will be closed Saturday, August 31 and the Household Rubbish site will be closed Monday, September 2 in observance of Labor Day.  The Compost site will reopen Tuesday, September 3, 3-7:00 p.m. and the Household Rubbish site will reopen Wednesday, September 4, 3-7:00 p.m. (or when capacity is met).

Presque Isle Park, Peter White Drive Closure

The seasonal portion of Peter White Drive in Presque Isle Park will be closed to vehicular traffic on Friday, August 30 from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for a Marquette Area Public Schools Cross Country meet.
The public is advised congestion at the park will significantly increase during this event with seventeen school districts participating. Please use care when visiting Presque Isle Park.

Marquette Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5k

The annual Marquette Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5k will be held on August 31, and a kid’s fun run will be held on August 30.

The Kids Fun Run will start at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and take place on the multi-use path on Pine Street.  

On Saturday at 9:00 a.m. the 5k will start at the Superior Dome and runners will follow the multi-use path north from Pine Street to Clark Lambros Park, and back. 

The marathon and half marathon begin west of the city limits and enter the city on the Iron Ore Heritage Trail. Runners are expected to arrive within the city limits at approximately 8:30 a.m. and follow the Heritage trail to McClellan Avenue, then continue along the multi-use path to Lakeshore Boulevard. Upon arrival at Lakeshore Boulevard, the marathon runners and half marathon runners will divide as follows:

  • Marathon participants will turn south on the path to a turn-around point at South Beach Park, then continue north on the path around Presque Isle before returning south towards Pine Street to finish at the Superior Dome.
  • Half marathon participants will turn south on the path for a short distance then turn around and run to Pine Street to finish at the Superior Dome.

The races cross numerous streets including Wilson, McClellan, Fifth, Fourth, Third, Front, Lakeshore, Baraga, Hampton, Island Beach, and Hawley.

McClellan Avenue between Washington Street and Baraga Avenue will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A signed detour route will be provided via Washington, Seventh, and Baraga.

Pine Street between Fair and Lakeshore Boulevard will be closed on Saturday from 5:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Presque Isle Park will be closed to motor vehicles on Saturday from 7:00 AM to 2:30 PM. 

All other roads will be open with road crossing volunteers and Marquette Police officers stopping cars to allow runners to cross from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Motorists are advised to use caution and to obey all road crossing attendants.

Unveiling of the City's Newest Public Art Sculpture

The City of Marquette announces the installation of the 'Seven Grandfather Teachings' sculpture by artist Jason Quigno to occur Friday, September 6. The sculpture has been commissioned by the City of Marquette Public Art Commission. Quigno, an Anishinaabe contemporary stone sculptor and tribal citizen of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, has carved seven locally quarried boulders to represent each of the Seven Grandfathers and the teachings they offer. The stones will be placed in a circle at the entrance of the recent Spear Dock walking pier renovation in the City's lower harbor. To celebrate the installation, several events are planned for Friday September 6:

  • Sculpture Unveiling Ceremony: 5:30-6:30 p.m., the community is invited to gather at the installation site and celebrate the addition of the Seven Grandfather Teachings sculpture to the City’s public art collection. Artist Jason Quigno will be present, and an Honor Song will be performed by the Summer Cloud Singers.
  • Evening Performance and Laser Light Show: 8:00 p.m., at Mattson Lower Harbor Park, Waawiyeyaa (a local Anishinaabe-based rock band) will open the evening’s festivities with original music. At 8:45 p.m., the Big Drum and Teal Lake Singers will perform traditional Ojibwe music. This will be accompanied by a laser light show projected onto the Ore Dock, produced by Indigenous artists and storytellers in collaboration with Fresh Coast Light Lab. The event is free and open to the public. Families and friends are encouraged to bring their own seating. The unveiling events are presented by the City of Marquette with support from Superior Watershed Partnership, Travel Marquette and the Fresh Coast Light Lab. The 'Seven Grandfather Teachings' sculpture will serve as the centerpiece of the new City Shoreline Cultural Trail. This Trail, honoring our community's diverse cultural heritage, will connect key sites along the City’s shoreline. The Seven Grandfather Teachings sculpture is funded by the National

City of Marquette Offices Closed for Labor Day

City offices located at Marquette City Hall, 300 W. Baraga Avenue; the Lakeview Arena, 401 E. Fair Avenue;  the Arts and Culture Center, 217 N. Front St. (in the Peter White Public Library); and the Municipal Service Center, 1100 Wright Street, will be closed on Monday, September 2, in observance of Labor Day.  Marquette Police, Fire, and Public Works and Utilities will remain operational during this time.

There will be no change in garbage pickup for City residents.

Street Disruptions Due to Milling and Paving Activities

As part of an ongoing City Street Improvement Project, Payne & Dolan, Inc. will begin asphalt resurfacing on Friday, August 16, 2024. This process involves milling the existing asphalt surfaces followed by repaving. The following streets are included in this project:
•Ridge Street - High to Spruce
•Pine Street – Hewitt to Ridge
•Hewitt Street – Seventh to Fourth
•Woodland Avenue – Center to Wright

Milling is scheduled for Friday August 16 through Monday August 19.
Paving is scheduled for Thursday September 5 through Saturday September 7.
Work will occur between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. (or as needed). Vehicular and pedestrian access to homes will be maintained. The work will be completed by means of short duration road closures, road detours, and flag control. The public is urged to use extreme caution and follow all traffic control measures.
