Marquette Public Art Commission Special Meeting Scheduled April 30

The Marquette Public Art Commission will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, April 30 at 6:00 p.m. to discuss a proposed Constitution monument at Harlow Park. This meeting will held in the Marquette Arts & Culture Center Studio #2 located in the lower level of Peter White Public Library, 217 N. Front St., Marquette.

Public Participation

There will be two options for public participation in this meeting: in-person or written. There will be two public comment periods for the meeting, one near the beginning of the agenda and one at the end. Comments are limited to three minutes and speakers must give their name and address before speaking. Written comments will be presented to the board during the meeting and can be submitted by emailing tmorin@marquettemi.gov. Written submissions will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

Lakeview Arena/YMCA Parking Lot Road Closure

Effective immediately, the one-way northwest exit from Lakeview Arena parking lot will be closed. This one-way exit is adjacent to the location of construction on the new portion of the YMCA building necessitating road closure until project completion. The one-way entrance to the north parking lot on the northeast corner of Lakeview Arena will become a two-way entrance/exit. Please use caution when entering the back parking lot. Patrons of Lakeview Arena and the YMCA are encouraged to use the front parking areas for the duration of the project

Southbound S. Lakeshore Boulevard Closure

Beginning Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Oberstar Inc. will close the southbound lane of Lakeshore Boulevard between Baraga Avenue and Front Street/US41 from 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. for utility service work. The closure will be utilized on weekdays through Tuesday, April 29, 2025. Local traffic will be allowed to travel southbound between Baraga Avenue and the entrance to the Gaines Rock Townhomes. Access to all homes and businesses within the closure will be maintained and northbound traffic will remain open. No utility disruptions are anticipated. The public is advised to take caution when traveling through this area and to be alert for construction and advisory signage

Park Cemetery Spring Item Removal

The City of Marquette is announcing that all Park Cemetery winter gravesite decorations must be removed before Monday, April 28, 2025.  Starting April 28, City crews will begin spring cleanup of the cemetery grounds and will dispose of any remaining items left at gravesites.

Public Input on 2025-2026 Time Capsule

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is seeking public input for the time capsule that is to be reburied this summer for 2025 to 2050. Suggestions can be made at the next meeting on April 21 at 5:45 p.m. in the Citizens Forum at Lakeview Arena. There will be a discussion on the agenda that will be open to the public to give ideas or offer collaboration. Those who cannot attend can email a written comment to the staff liaison, Andrew MacIver at amaciver@marquettemi.gov.

Accessible Little Free Library Opening at Kids Cove II, A Playground for All

The City of Marquette has partnered with the Marquette Playgrounds For All (MPFA) and Northern Michigan University Construction Management program, to construct and install an accessible “Little Free Library” at Kids Cove Playground.  The library will offer an opportunity for the public to give a book or take a book to promote literacy. Please join the City, MPFA and NMU Construction management for the official unveiling of the library at Mattson Park on April 17, 2025, at 6:30 p.m.

28th Annual City of Marquette Art Awards - Call for Nominations

The City of Marquette Office of Arts & Culture welcomes the community to nominate individuals, organizations, and businesses for the 28th Annual City of Marquette Art Awards.

Nominees may be nominated for one or more of the eleven categories listed below.

Arts Volunteer, Arts Advocate, Arts Educator, Youth Award, Visual Artist, Performing Artist, Writer of the Year, Special Recognition, Arts Organization, Arts Innovation, and Arts Business. The deadline for nomination is Sunday, June 29, 2025.

To nominate, learn more about the City Annual Art Awards, and find a complete list of previous award recipients please visit www.mqtcompass.com/annual-art-awards. Please note that nominations for non-residents are welcome as long as the nominee has made contributions in the City of Marquette.

Award recipients are honored at a formal ceremony and reception. This year’s ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, October 5 at the Ore Dock Brewing Co. More information about the ceremony will be announced at a later date.
