On Friday June 17, Oberstar Inc. will be closing a section of Grove Street for water main work in Marquette Township. Grove Street will be closed to through traffic between Vandenboom Road and McClellan Avenue from 8:00am to 4:00pm. The work will occur just past the City limits between Grandview Circle and Specker Circle. Access will be maintained to all residences and businesses.

The public is advised to use caution when traveling through this area and to be alert for construction and advisory signing.

Beginning at 12:30pm on Sunday, June 19, the Catholic Diocese of Marquette will be hosting a procession. 

The procession will begin at noon at St. Peter Cathedral located at 311 W. Baraga Avenue and proceed north on Fourth Street to St. Michael Church located at 401 W. Kaye Avenue. 

The procession will utilize the roadway and have a police escort.  Motorists traveling on Fourth Street are asked to avoid the procession and use an alternative route.

Fitch Avenue, between Hawley Street and White Street, will be closed to through traffic for sanitary sewer repairs beginning Wednesday, June 15 at 7:00 a.m. Project completion is expected by the end of the day on Thursday, June 16.

The City of Marquette Brownfield Redevelopment Authority has rescheduled the June meeting. The meeting will take place at the Municipal Service Center, 1100 Wright Street, 2^nd Floor Conference Room. at 8:00 a.m.  on June 23, 2022.

McMillan St., between Altamont St. and Anderson St., will be closed to through traffic for a water service replacement. The road closure will take place on Tuesday, June 14, at 7:00 a.m. Completion is expected by the end of the day.

The City of Marquette is proud to present the seventh annual City of Marquette Art Week, June 20-June 25, 2022. A week full of special events hosted along the lakeshore in City park spaces dedicated to arts and culture including exhibits, concerts, workshops, installations, demonstrations, and live performances. Art Week is made possible thanks to collaboration with over 200 local artists, businesses, organizations, and other community partners and is supported by the Michigan Arts and Culture Council. 

This year we move to the lakeshore, from Carp River to Presque Isle, to explore what Water means to us. Daily locations are centered around different public places along the shoreline and are inspired by the City’s new cultural trail project. Headlining events include a kickoff concert by Hiawatha Music Co-op at Presque Isle Park, Musical Performance and Poetry at South Beach Park, Presque Isle Artist Market, the annual Fresh Coast Plein Air Painting Festival, performances by the Marquette City Band and local Anishinaabe-based Rock Band Waawiyeyaa, Sister Cities partnering with the Marquette Symphony Orchestra Summer Strings for a Finnish Midsummer celebration, Art Stroll downtown, a Wednesday Artist Market at the Marquette Commons, It’s All About Love sidewalk chalk festival by the UP Children’s Museum, performances by TaMaMa Dance Company and Superior Strings Alliance, a Closing Concert curated by Michael Waite hosted at the Lighthouse Park, and many more popup artist demos, workshops, music, performances, installations, and exhibits to explore throughout the week!

The City of Marquette Office of Arts and Culture has been approved for a $100,000 Our Town award from the National Endowment for the Arts to support the Cultural Trail (Trail). This is one of 51 grants nationwide the agency has approved in this category to support projects that integrate arts, culture, and design activities into efforts that strengthen communities by advancing local economic, physical, and/or social outcomes.

“The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support arts and cultural organizations throughout the nation with these grants, including the City of Marquette, providing opportunities for all of us to live artful lives,” said NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD. “The arts contribute to our individual well-being, the well-being of our communities, and to our local economies. The arts are also crucial to helping us make sense of our circumstances from different perspectives as we emerge from the pandemic and plan for a shared new normal informed by our examined experience.”
The Trail will honor and preserve our City’s diverse cultural heritage, history, and environment from the mouth of the Carp River to Presque Isle, through public space design, public art, and interpretive signage. The seven mile Trail will connect and give voice to the multiple stories, historic sites, natural features, and landmarks along the City’s multi-use pathway. Education will serve as the central mission, providing a platform to build cultural understanding and a shared vision of the future. This project is led by the City’s Office of Arts and Culture in cooperation with arts, history, cultural, environmental, tribal, educational, and economic institutions.

The City of Marquette, City Hall offices will be moving to summer office hours beginning June 10, 2022. Summer hours will continue through Labor Day.

The 300 block of West Ohio will be closed to through traffic Tuesday, June 7 for a sanitary main repair at 7 a.m. This project is expected to be completed by end of the day.
