September 21 MBRA Meeting Canceled

The September 21 regular meeting of the City of Marquette Brownfield Redevelopment Authority has been canceled due to lack of agenda items. The meetings are held at 8:00 a.m. at the Municipal Service Center, 1100 Wright Street on the third Thursday of each month. The next scheduled meeting is on October 19, 2023

Spruce Street Closure

Spruce Street will be closed to through traffic for a sewer main repair between Ohio Street and Hewitt Avenue on Tuesday, September 19 beginning at 7:00 a.m. This project is expected to be completed by the end of the day on Wednesday, September 20.

Lakeview Arena Public Skating

Public Skating 2023-2024 begins Monday, September 18, 2023

The City of Marquette announces Lakeview Arena’s Public Skating Hours:

  • Drop-In Figure Skating                                   Monday-Friday 9:00-9:50am
  • Preschool/Parent & Senior Citizens               Monday-Friday 10:00-11:20am
  • Drop-In Hockey                                              Monday-Friday 11:30am-12:50pm
  • Public Skate (all ages)                                    Monday-Sunday 1:00-2:50pm
  • Senior/Adult Skate (55 & older)                     Friday 7:00-8:30pm beginning October 20

(Free to Marquette City senior residents with ID)

  • Drop-In Curling                                              Sundays 7:30pm-10:30pm beginning October 15

The public skating schedule can be affected by tournaments and holidays. Saturday, Sept 23 there will be no public skating for the Stick it to Cancer hockey tournament.

Marji Gesick 50 Mile Start

On Saturday, September 16, the Marji Gesick 50-mile mountain bike race will be starting on Lakeshore Boulevard between Washington Street and Spring Street. Riders will head south to the Carp River bridge by means of Lakeshore Boulevard, the City multi-use path and Lake Street. Riders will continue under the bridge to Cliffs Power Road, Mount Marquette Road, and onto NTN trails.

Between 6:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Lakeshore Boulevard will be closed between Spring Street and Washington Street, and closed to through traffic between Washington Street and Ridge Street. Traffic will be detoured via Spring Street, Front Street and Ridge Street. Police officers will be directing traffic on Lakeshore Boulevard; however, Lake Street, Cliffs Power Road and Mount Marquette Road will remain open to traffic.

Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through this area and to be alert for police officers directing traffic and detour signage.

NMU Homecoming Parade

Northern Michigan University will be holding their annual homecoming parade on Friday September 15, starting at 5:30 p.m. The route will start in the NMU parking lot off Pine Street, head south on Pine Street to Fair Avenue, head west on Fair Avenue to Third Street, head south on Third Street to Hewitt Avenue, head east on Hewitt Avenue to Front Street, head north on Front Street to return to the start. The parade will be escorted by the Marquette City Police, and streets along the route will be closed to through traffic during the parade.

Marquette City Manager Community Office Hours

Marquette City Manager Karen Kovacs will hold her next community office hours on Wednesday, September 13 from 10 a.m. to noon in the Shiras Room, on the top level of Peter White Public Library (Front Street side).  The meeting is intended to provide an informal opportunity to discuss issues within the community, and to give citizens the opportunity for direct dialogue with City staff about interests and concerns.

Kids Cove Enclosure Picket Return

A final pick up for pickets from the Kids Cove playground enclosure at Mattson Lower Harbor Park will be held:

Lakeview Arena Southwest Conference Room

Friday, September 8, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

and

Saturday, September 9, 2 p.m.-4 p.m.

If you sponsored a picket for the original enclosure constructed in 1996, your sponsored picket may be available to you. No new pickets have been found. Most pickets have been picked up, however, over 200 remain.  The effort to return pickets to original donors is made possible by City of Marquette Playgrounds for All Committee, Marquette Rotary Clubs and City of Marquette.
