Water Service Line Material Identification Work to Begin

To comply with requirements set by the Michigan Department of Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) the City of Marquette is required to identify the material from which all water service lines in the City are constructed. The City recently received a $600,000 grant from EGLE to complete water service material identification. The work has been contracted to Smith Construction Inc. To comply with the EGLE requirements Smith will be identifying service line materials inside homes as well as making small excavations near the City right of way to identify materials there.

Affected residents will receive a letter from Smith noting whether their service line material needs to be identified at the right of way, inside the home, or at both locations. If the material needs to be identified inside the home, the homeowner will need to make an appointment with Smith to provide access to their basement or crawlspace. If their service line needs to be identified at the right of way, small excavations will be made to visually identify the material. These holes will be backfilled and restored in-kind. Any disruptions to driveway access will be coordinated directly with residents.

This project is scheduled to start Wednesday August 7. No street closures will be required for this work; however, the public is advised to take caution when traveling through work areas and to be alert for construction and advisory signing.
