In cooperation with the Superior Watershed Partnership and Northern Michigan University Biology Department, the City of Marquette will be closing a portion of Peter White Drive in Presque Isle Park to facilitate the safe migration of the blue-spotted salamander.

The southwest bend of Peter White Drive from the Ice Cream Store Pavilion to the gate north of the pavilion will close to vehicular traffic daily at 8:00 p.m. from March 15 to May 15 or until the completion of the migration.  Road barricades will be placed and removed daily to prevent vehicular traffic use of the migration area.  Foot traffic is permitted in the area during regular park hours.

The Marquette Public Art Commission (MPAC) invites local artists to apply to design and paint text-inspired, site-specific artworks on the surface of the Holly Greer Bike Path in Marquette.

The Words to Live and Bike By project links language, exploration, and artistic expression to invite Marquette and its visitors to connect as a community. These words - REMEMBER, RESPECT, HOPE, DREAM, and GRATITUDE - were originally selected by the Marquette Public Art Commission prior to their first installation onto the bike path in 2020. Four years later the original murals have faded and yet, the importance of these words persists. MPAC now invites a new set of local artists to reimagine the original words at the following sites:

REMEMBER: North Lakeshore along restored shoreline

GRATITUDE: South side of the Marquette Commons

DREAM: Lower Harbor/Kids Cove

RESPECT: North Lakeshore Blvd. between McCarty's Cove and Shiras Park

HOPE: Clark Lambros Beach Park

Applicants may submit multiple designs but will only be selected to create one mural. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, April 28th. Winners will be notified by May 10, 2024, with painting to occur on June 24-29, 2024 during City of Marquette Art Week.

The selected words will be stenciled on the bike path with white outline prior to painters’ arrival on-site. Completed murals will be 6 ft. in height and vary in length depending on the length of the proposed word. Selected artists will receive $300 and all necessary supplies including paint, brushes, drop cloths, etc.

The 2024 Marinas Seasonal Slip Agreements have been mailed to the 2023 seasonal slip holders on March 7, 2024.  Payments will be accepted beginning March 8, 2024 at the Community Services Parks and Recreation Office located in Lakeview Arena at 401 E. Fair Avenue.

The City of Marquette Office of Arts & Culture is hosting a public contest to choose the cover artwork for the Art Week Magazine. All entries are created by local artists and are inspired by this year’s Art Week theme 'Grow'. Artwork is now on display in a virtual exhibit and open for voting on MQTcompass.com.

The Marquette Area Wastewater Treatment Facility Advisory Board (MAWTAB) meeting on March 21, 2024 has been canceled due to a lack of quorum.

The next scheduled meeting will be located at the Marquette Wastewater Treatment Plant, April 18, 2024.

Marquette Assistant City Manager Sean Hobbins will hold the next community office hours on Wednesday, March 13 from 10 a.m. to noon in the Heritage Room, on the top level of Peter White Public Library (Front Street side).  The meeting is intended to provide an informal opportunity to discuss issues within the community, and to give citizens the opportunity for direct dialogue with City staff about interests and concerns.

The City of Marquette Arts and Culture Advisory Committee’s March meeting, originally scheduled for Tuesday, March 5 at 5:30 p.m, has been canceled. This meeting will be rescheduled to a later date in March.

The Marquette City Planning Commission meeting originally scheduled for March 5, 2024, has been canceled due to lack of business. The next schedule meeting is March 19, 2024.

The Board of Zoning Appeals regular meeting on March 7, 2024, has been canceled.   The next scheduled meeting will be held on April 4, 2024.

The Marquette Public Art Commission will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, February 28 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the selected finalists for the dragonfly sculpture installation at the new Kids Cove park. This meeting will held in the Marquette Arts & Culture Center located in the lower level of Peter White Public Library, 217 N. Front St., Marquette.

Public Participation

There will be two options for public participation in this meeting: in-person or written. There will be two public comment periods for the meeting, one near the beginning of the agenda and one at the end. Comments are limited to three minutes and speakers must give their name and address before speaking. Written comments will be presented to the board during the meeting and can be submitted by emailing tmorin@marquettemi.gov.
