Starting Thursday October 6, Superior Paving will be closing Magnetic Street between Presque Isle Avenue and Third Street for paving work. The work is anticipated to be completed by the end of the day Monday October 10.

The public is advised to use caution when traveling through this area and to be alert for construction and advisory signing.

Marquette City Manager Karen Kovacs will hold her next community office hours on Wednesday, October 12 from 10 a.m. to noon in the main floor conference room of the Peter White Public Library.  The meeting is intended to provide an informal opportunity to discuss issues within the community, and to give citizens the opportunity for direct dialogue with City staff about interests and concerns.

Lakeshore Boulevard will be closed to through traffic between East Washington Street and East Ridge Street, for tree work on Tuesday, October 4. This project will begin at 7 a.m. and is expected to be completed by 2 p.m. A detour will be provided.

On Thursday October 6, 2022, at 2:30 p.m. Michigan State Fire Marshal, Kevin Sehlmeyer will be reading to second and third grade students at Superior Hills Elementary. The reading will be a kick-off for Fire Prevention Week which occurs October 9-15, 2022.

The yellow-top recycling carts are being collected by Waste Management upon the completion of the blue recycling cart rollout. Please leave all yellow-top carts at the curb until they are collected. These carts will be recorded and repurposed as garbage carts for other residents. If you believe your cart was missed, please contact Waste Management at 906-662-6065.

On Friday, September 30, beginning at 5:30 p.m. and continuing through approximately 6:30 p.m., the Marquette Senior High School will be holding their annual homecoming parade. 

The parade will begin at the Graveraet School, exit west east on Hewitt Avenue to Third Street, proceed north on Third Street to Magnetic Street, then west on Magnetic Street to Lincoln Avenue, then north on Lincoln Avenue to College Avenue, and then west to MSHS High School parking lot.

As Fire Prevention Week™ approaches, the Marquette City Fire Department reminds residents that “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.™”

The Marquette City Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®)—to celebrate the 100^th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week ^TM (FPW), October 9-15, 2022. This year’s FPW campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape ^TM”,  works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires. 

“Today’s homes burn faster than ever. You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA.

The Marquette City Fire Department encourages all residents to embrace the 2022 Fire Prevention Week theme.

“It’s important for everyone to plan and practice a home fire escape. Everyone needs to be prepared in advance, so that they know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds. Given that every home is different, every home fire escape plan will also be different,” said Fire Chief Ian Davis. “Have a plan for everyone in the home. Children, older adults, and people with disabilities may need assistance to wake up and get out. Make sure that someone will help them!”

Marquette City Fire Department wants to share these key home fire escape planning tips:

• Make sure your plan meets the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
• Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every levelof your home. Smoke alarms should be interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound.
• Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Make sure all doors and windows open easily.
• Have an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home where everyone should meet.
• Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year with everyone in the household, including guests. Practice at least once during the day and at night.

The Marquette City Fire Department is hosting a series of events in support of this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.”, including Firetruck Static Display on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Harlow Park (with a rain date of October 15) with a parade at 12:30 p.m.

The Board of Zoning Appeals regular meeting on October 6, 2022, has been canceled.   The next scheduled meeting will be held on November 3, 2022.

The City of Marquette Clerk’s office has now mailed absentee ballots for the November 8 election to registered voters who have submitted a request.

Registered voters can still begin the process of voting absentee in the following ways:

• Complete an application online at www.mi.gov/vote with a valid Michigan Driver’s License
• By phone or email: 906-228-0430 or clerk@marquettemi.gov
• In person at the Clerk’s Office at 300 W. Baraga Ave

Absentee ballot applications, absentee ballots, and voter registration forms may be returned by mail, or via one of the City’s three 24-hour secure election drop box locations:

• City Hall: 300 W. Baraga Ave
• Municipal Service Center: 1100 Wright Street
• Lakeview Arena: 401 E. Fair Ave

The City Clerk’s office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and will incorporate extended office hours in the lead-up to the November election. Beginning in October and continuing through election day, the Clerk’s office will be open each Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Additionally, the office will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 5.

Ohio Street, between Cedar Street and Fern Place Boulevard, will be closed to through traffic on Wednesday, September 28 beginning at 7:00 a.m. for a sewer lateral replacement. This project is expected to be completed by the end of the day.
