On Saturday, September 21 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., the City of Marquette Office of Arts and Culture and Marquette Public Art Commission will be hosting a FREE professional development workshop at Northern Michigan University Art & Design Building, room AD165. How to Thrive as a Public Artist welcomes professional artists, arts administrators, educators, and advocates seeking to enhance their skills and advance their careers in the public art sector.
The free workshop will be led by Brian Wignall, whose diverse portfolio includes sculptures, murals, and multimedia projects featured around the world, and who was selected by the Marquette Public Art Commission to create the Dragonfly sculpture for Mattson Park Kids Cove playground. Also presenting during the workshop will be award-winning motivational author Julie Wignall.
Key topics include:
Finding Your Niche: Refining artist statements and portfolios
Writing the Proposal: Crafting compelling letters of interest, developing visual concepts,finding fabricators, cost estimation, insurance, and managing fabrication and delivery timelines.
The Business of Art: Navigating public and commercial art sectors, building partnerships,engaging with the community, creating opportunities, and effective marketing strategies.
Participants will leave with a tailored strategic action plan to support their professional growth.
