The Cinder Pond Marina fuel dock will be out of service Tuesday, September 2 and Wednesday, September 3, 2025, for the installation of new gasoline & diesel fuel dispensers. Gasoline and diesel sales will resume on Thursday, September 4, 2025

Work has begun on a project at Tourist Park which includes the construction of a day-use access roadway and parking area.

Smith Construction Inc. is the general contractor. The project area will be fenced off and closed to the public. The park access road and the City multi-use pathway at County Road 550 will remain open. The public is urged to take caution, follow all traffic control measures and be aware of construction equipment entering the site.

Construction is expected to be completed this fall.

The Board of Zoning Appeals regular meeting on September 4, 2025, has been canceled. The next scheduled meeting will be held on October 2, 2025

The Compost site will be closed on Saturday, August 30 for Labor Day weekend. The Compost site will reopen Tuesday, September 2, 3p.m.-7:00 p.m.

The Household Rubbish site will be closed on Monday, September 1 for Labor Day. The Rubbish site will reopen on Wednesday, September 3, 3p.m.-7:00pm (or when capacity is met).

The annual Marquette Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5k will be held on Saturday, August 30, and a kid’s fun run will be held on Friday, August 29.The Kids Fun Run will start at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and take place on the multi-use path on Pine Street.

On Saturday at 9:00 a.m. the 5k will start at the Superior Dome and runners will follow the multi-use path north from Pine Street to Clark Lambros Park, and back.

The marathon and half marathon begin west of the city limits and enter the city on the Iron Ore Heritage Trail. Runners are expected to arrive within the city limits at approximately 8:30 a.m. and follow the Heritage trail to McClellan Avenue, then continue along the multi-use path to Lakeshore Boulevard. Upon arrival at Lakeshore Boulevard, the marathon runners and half marathon runners will divide as follows:

• Marathon participants will turn south on the path to a turn-around point at South Beach Park, then continue north on the path around Presque Isle before returning south towards Pine Street to finish at the Superior Dome.

• Half marathon participants will turn south on the path for a short distance then turnaround and run to Pine Street to finish at the Superior Dome.

The races cross numerous streets including Wilson, McClellan, Fifth, Fourth, Third, Front, Lakeshore, Baraga, Hampton, Island Beach, and Hawley.

McClellan Avenue between Washington Street and Baraga Avenue will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A signed detour route will be provided via Washington, Seventh, and Baraga.

Pine Street between Fair and Lakeshore Boulevard will be closed on Saturday from 5:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Presque Isle Park will be closed to motor vehicles on Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. All other roads will be open with road crossing volunteers and Marquette Police officers stopping cars to allow runners to cross from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Motorists are advised to use caution and to obey all road crossing attendants

Mattson Lower Harbor and Picnic Rocks bathrooms will be closed from Monday, September 1 through Friday, September 5 for updates. The Kids Cove playground bathroom will remain open.

City of Marquette residents are invited and encouraged to participate in the communitywide “Trash to Treasure Weekend” beginning Friday, September 5 through Sunday, September 7.

The purpose of the program is to provide a venue for the recycling of reusable household items such as furniture, lamps, electronics and other working household items. The program is designed to increase awareness of recycling by creating an alternative means of reusing items that would otherwise end up in the landfill.

GUIDELINES

Residents can place reusable/serviceable items in front of their house on the curb no earlier than 5:00 p.m. Friday, September 5. Unclaimed items must be removed from the curb no later than 5:00 p.m. Sunday, September 7.Removal of items will be strictly enforced in accordance with Marquette City Code Section 22.33,“It shall be unlawful for any person to accumulate rubbish or any articles or junk, except as may be necessary for construction work or normal course of a business.”This Public Service Announcement will serve as notice that items left at the curb will be picked up by the Public Works Department and invoiced to the property owner on a time, material, and disposal fee basis.

College students are encouraged to participate in the treasure hunt in that they may find items which will be useful to them in their dormitory or apartment.

Examples of items that can be recycled include lamps, tables, chairs, dishes, etc. Please, no rubbish. Rubbish is defined to mean anything that does not work, is not clean and is not serviceable.

Depositing unwanted items is prohibited.

It is suggested that residents remove lawn ornaments and other wanted items to avoid mistaken identity

Walking hours for the seasonal portion of Peter White Drive in Presque Isle Park will be extended on Thursday, August 28 until 6:00 p.m. for a Marquette Area Public Schools Cross Country meet. The gate for vehicular traffic on the loop will open at 6:00 p.m.

The public is advised of expected congestion at the park during this event with thirteen school districts participating.

City offices located at Marquette City Hall, 300 W. Baraga Avenue; the Lakeview Arena, 401 E. Fair Avenue; the Arts and Culture Center, 217 N. Front St. (in the Peter White Public Library); and the Municipal Service Center, 1100 Wright Street, will be closed on Monday, September 1, in observance of Labor Day. Marquette Police, Fire, and Public Works and Utilities will remain operational during this time.
