The Local Development Finance Authority April 21 meeting has been canceled due to lack of quorum.

The City of Marquette is announcing that all Park Cemetery winter gravesite decorations must be removed before Monday, April 28, 2025.  Starting April 28, City crews will begin spring cleanup of the cemetery grounds and will dispose of any remaining items left at gravesites.

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is seeking public input for the time capsule that is to be reburied this summer for 2025 to 2050. Suggestions can be made at the next meeting on April 21 at 5:45 p.m. in the Citizens Forum at Lakeview Arena. There will be a discussion on the agenda that will be open to the public to give ideas or offer collaboration. Those who cannot attend can email a written comment to the staff liaison, Andrew MacIver at amaciver@marquettemi.gov.

The City of Marquette has partnered with the Marquette Playgrounds For All (MPFA) and Northern Michigan University Construction Management program, to construct and install an accessible “Little Free Library” at Kids Cove Playground.  The library will offer an opportunity for the public to give a book or take a book to promote literacy. Please join the City, MPFA and NMU Construction management for the official unveiling of the library at Mattson Park on April 17, 2025, at 6:30 p.m.

The City of Marquette Office of Arts & Culture welcomes the community to nominate individuals, organizations, and businesses for the 28th Annual City of Marquette Art Awards.

Nominees may be nominated for one or more of the eleven categories listed below.

Arts Volunteer, Arts Advocate, Arts Educator, Youth Award, Visual Artist, Performing Artist, Writer of the Year, Special Recognition, Arts Organization, Arts Innovation, and Arts Business. The deadline for nomination is Sunday, June 29, 2025.

Award recipients are honored at a formal ceremony and reception. This year’s ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, October 5 at the Ore Dock Brewing Co. More information about the ceremony will be announced at a later date.

Curbside brush collection will be conducted May 5 - May 9. The brush volume from each property is limited to one pickup load, a pile approx. 12’L x 6’W x 5’H. Crews will collect loose or brown bagged leaves May 12 – May 23.

Street sweeping and sand pickup will be conducted during leaf collection dates for all residential routes. The City will not collect material after the last date listed for each route.

The Composting Drop-off site located at 1415 Pioneer Rd. is opening April 22 for the season. It is open Tuesdays 3pm – 7pm and Saturdays 9am – 1pm. Any yard waste will be accepted but brush will be limited to one pickup load per day. Proof of “Solid Waste” fee payment on a City water bill and ID is required for admittance.

The Household Rubbish site will open April 21. It is open Mondays and Wednesdays 3pm – 7pm and the second Saturday of each month 1pm – 4pm. Extra days have been added to the first two weeks to assist with spring cleaning. Thursday, April 24, Saturday, April 26, and Thursday, May 1.

The regular schedule will begin May 5. Sites will close once dumpsters are at capacity. Dates and the map of the City of Marquette’s curbside brush and leaf collection and compost and rubbish site opening can be found on the Public Work's page on the City's website.

City offices located at Marquette City Hall, 300 W. Baraga Avenue; the Lakeview Arena, 401 E. Fair Avenue; the Arts and Culture Center, 217 N. Front St. (in the Peter White Public Library); and the Municipal Service Center, 1100 Wright Street, will be closed on Friday, April 18, in observance of Good Friday. Marquette Police, Fire, and Public Works and Utilities will remain operational during this time. There will be no change in garbage pickup for City residents

The regular meeting of the City of Marquette Brownfield Redevelopment Authority Board has been changed from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., effective April 16, 2025 and all future meetings. The meetings will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the Municipal Service Center, 1100 Wright Street, Marquette, MI. 49855 on the third Wednesday of each month.

Peter White Public Library galleries welcome new exhibits for the months of April through May. On Thursday April 10, 6:00-8:00 p.m., the Peter White Public Library and the City of Marquette Office of Arts and Culture invite the community to an evening of art and community connection. The reception features light refreshments, artist talks, and various art activities. Receptions are free and open to the public. Exhibits are accessible during regular Library hours and will be on display through the end of May.

EXHIBITS:

Huron Mountain Club Gallery (Main floor): Patterns of Connection by Knot Work Studio Multiple Mediums – A showcase of “collective effervescence”, Knot Work Studiois a creative collective that encourages an "anti-excellence" mindset, where artists, writers, and makers can embrace the creative process without the pressure of perfectionism. Artist Talk begins at 6:30 p.m.

Deo Gallery (Lower Level):What Makes You, You? by Artists in Excellence Students
Multiple Mediums - AIE is a cross district program that provides unique art-based extracurricular experiences for students from Negaunee, Marquette, Gwinn and Ishpeming High Schools. This exhibit will be on display for the month of April. Artist Talk begins at 7:00 p.m.

The Annual High School Art Show will be on display for the month of May and will feature a large body of work created by art students enrolled in Negaunee, Marquette, Gwinn and Ishpeming High Schools and North Star Academy.

Receptions are generously made possible by Friends of PWPL. The Huron Mountain Club Gallery is located on the main level of PWPL. The Deo Gallery is located in the lower level of the PWPL in the City’s Arts & Culture Center; it is supported by the Lake Superior Art Association.
