Marquette Public Art Commission April Meeting Rescheduled

The regular Marquette Public Art Commission meeting originally scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, 2025 has been rescheduled to Wednesday, April 23, 2025. The meeting will still be held beginning at 6:30pm at the Marquette Arts & Culture Center, located on the lower level of Peter White Public Library, 217 N. Front St., Marquette.

Local Candidate Filing Deadline Update

In November 2024, Marquette city voters approved an amendment to the City Charter, eliminating primary elections for local offices. As a result, the filing deadline for local offices has shifted from April to July.

For the upcoming November 2025 local election, the filing deadline is set for 4 p.m. on July 22 for candidates for both the Marquette City Commission and the Board of Light Power.

Nominating packets will be available in the City Clerk’s office beginning in June.

Marquette City Manager community Office Hours

Marquette City Manager Karen Kovacs will hold her next community office hours on Wednesday, April 9 from 10 a.m. to noon in the Shiras Room, on the top level of Peter White Public Library (Front Street side). The meeting is intended to provide an informal opportunity to discuss issues within the community, and to give citizens the opportunity for direct dialogue with City staff about interests and concerns

Street Closures - April 5, 2025

Beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, 2025, several city streets will be closed in order to facilitate a march that is scheduled to take place. The event will begin at the Marquette Commons, with participants utilizing the roadway, and the following streets will be closed to thru traffic for the march, which will have a Police escort:

Third Street from Washington to Main

Main Street from Third to Front

Front Street from Main to Washington

Washington Street from Front to Fourth Street

Third Street from Washington to Multi Use Path

The march is anticipated to last approximately half an hour. Motorists are asked to find alternative routes and use caution while driving in these areas.

Seasonal Launch Permits

Beginning March 25, 2025, the City of Marquette will require all boaters to obtain a launch permit to launch a boat at either Cinder Pond or Presque Isle Marinas.

Seasonal launch permits are now available for purchase at Lakeview Arena Parks & Recreation office, located at 401 E. Fair Avenue, the City of Marquette’s Treasurer’s office located at 300 W. Baraga Avenue.  Seasonal launch permits will also be available at Cinder Pond Marina office beginning May 6, 2025.  The cost is $70.00 per seasonal launch permit, and $20.00 for an additional launch permit (restrictions apply).

Daily launch permits are $7.00 and are available in the red launch boxes located at Cinder Pond and Presque Isle Marinas.

Presque Isle Salamanders

In cooperation with the Superior Watershed Partnership and Northern Michigan University Biology Department, the City of Marquette will be closing a portion of Peter White Drive in Presque Isle Park to facilitate the safe migration of the blue-spotted salamander.

The southwest bend of Peter White Drive from the Ice Cream Store Pavilion to the gate north of the pavilion will close to vehicular traffic daily at 8:00 p.m. from March 17th to May 15th or until the completion of the migration.  Road barricades will be placed and removed daily to prevent vehicular traffic use of the migration area.  Foot traffic is permitted in the area during regular park hours.

PUBLIC INPUT ON 2025-2050 TIME CAPSULE

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is seeking public input for the time capsule that is to be reburied this summer for 2025 to 2050. Suggestions can be made at the next PRAB meeting Monday,  March 17th at 5:45 PM in the Citizens Forum at Lakeview Arena.

There will be a discussion on the agenda that will be open to the public to give ideas or offer collaboration. Those who cannot attend can email a written comment to the staff liaison, Andrew MacIver at amaciver@marquettemi.gov.
