Candidate Filings for City Commission and BLP Seats Due July 22

The Marquette City Clerk’s Office is accepting nomination packets for city elective positions available in the upcoming election year. Interested candidates must submit their completed packets by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22.

This election cycle, voters will select one member for the Marquette Board of Light and Power and two commissioners for the Marquette City Commission. These positions will be contested in the General Election on November 4, 2025.

Nominating documents, including petition forms, are available for collection at the City Clerk’s Office located at 300 W. Baraga Avenue. Alternatively, candidates may download the forms at www.marquettemi.gov/candidatefilings.

Per the eligibility requirements of the Marquette City Charter, each candidate must have been a registered voter of the City of Marquette for at least one year prior to filing and may not be in default to the City

Presque Isle Park Time Capsule Reburial

The Presque Isle Park time capsule will be buried on Tuesday, July 8 at 1:00 p.m. in its former location near the deer yard in Presque Isle Park immediately across from the Superior Watershed Partnership offices.   

The large time capsule will be reburied in its original location in Presque Isle Park with contents contributed from multiple community groups. 

The public is invited to the park to view the burial.    

Compost and Rubbish Site Closures

The Compost site will be closed on Saturday, July 5 in observance of 4th of July. The Compost site will reopen Tuesday, July 8, 3-7:00 p.m.

The Household Rubbish site will be closed on Wednesday, July 9 for scheduled maintenance. The Rubbish site will reopen on Saturday, July 12, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. (or when capacity is met).

Marquette City Manager Community Office Hours

Marquette City Manager Karen Kovacs will hold her next community office hours on Wednesday, July 9, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Shiras Room, on the top level of Peter White Public Library (Front Street side).  The meeting is intended to provide an informal opportunity to discuss issues within the community, and to give citizens the opportunity for direct dialogue with City staff about interests and concerns.

Fourth of July Parade Street Closures

Beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 4th, Washington Street from McClellan Avenue to Third Street and Third Street from Washington Street to Baraga Avenue will be closed to through traffic to hold the annual Fourth of July Parade. The parade is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. Third and Washington Streets are scheduled to reopen as soon as the parade is completed.

McClellan Avenue from Baraga Avenue to Ridge Street and Baraga Avenue west of McClellan Avenue will be closed for parade-staging starting at 10:30 a.m. These areas will open to traffic as soon as the parade is completed.

North Front Street will remain open as an emergency vehicle route

Summer Property Tax Bills

Summer tax bills totaling approximately $44.7 million will be mailed to Marquette City property owners on June 30, 2025. The due date for payment of City summer taxes is September 14, 2025.

Tax collection begins July 1, 2025, and payments are accepted without interest through September 14, 2025, at the City Treasurer’s office or online (fees apply) at www.marquettemi.gov. Interest of 1% is added to the summer tax bill on September 15th and on the 15th of every following month.

The 2025 summer property tax bill represents millage levies for the City of Marquette, Library, Senior Millage, DDA, Marquette Public Schools, State Education, Marquette-Alger RESA, County Operating, and Iron Ore Heritage Authority
