A classic car auto show will be held on Third Street on Saturday, August 17, 2024. The following streets will be closed to through traffic from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
•Third Street from Michigan Street to Magnetic Street
•Ohio Street from Front Street to Fourth Street
•Hewitt Avenue from Front Street to Fourth Street
•Prospect Street from Front Street to Fourth Street
•Crescent Street from Front Street to Fourth Street
Traffic will be detoured using Michigan Street, Fourth Street and Magnetic Street.
To ensure no cars are parked in the event area, parking will be prohibited on Third Street between Ohio Street and Park Street beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
On Sunday, August 18, Baraga Avenue between Front Street and Third Street will be closed from 10:00am to 7:00pm for a block party hosted by the Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum.
Motorists are advised to take caution when traveling through this area.
Work has now begun on the Lakeshore Boulevard Shoreline Restoration Project. The project is located along Lakeshore Boulevard between Pine Street and Hawley Street. The project involves the construction of a living revetment that is designed to attenuate wave energy and prevent further shoreline erosion. The living revetement will be comprised of mainly cobble sized quarried stones. Also included is the construction of coastal habitat, walking paths and a boardwalk overlook.
Smith Construction Inc. is the general contractor. The project area will be fenced off and closed to the public. The City multi-use path will remain open. The public is urged to take caution, follow all traffic control measures and be aware of truck traffic that is crossing the City multi-use pathway. Construction is expected to last 18 months.
The Harbor Advisory Committee (HAC) meeting scheduled for August 13, 2024 has been canceled. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be September 10, 2024.
Community Office Hours at the Peter White Public Library with Marquette City Manager Karen Kovacs have been canceled for Wednesday, August 14.
AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER MARQUETTE PUBLIC ART COMMISSION MEETINGS RESCHEDULED
The Marquette Public Art Commission meetings originally scheduled for Wednesdays, August 14 and September 11 have been rescheduled to Wednesdays, August 21 and September 18, respectively. Meetings will still be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Marquette Arts & Culture Center, located on the lower level of Peter White Public Library, 217 N. Front St., Marquette.
On Saturday, August 10, 2024, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Pine Street from Fair Avenue to Lakeshore Boulevard and Powder Mill Road from County Road 550 to the north end will be closed, and Wright Street from Presque Isle Avenue to Lakeshore Boulevard will be closed to thru traffic for the “Ore to Shore” Mountain Bike Race.
Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling on Wright Street, Hawley Street, River Park Circle and Schneider Mill Court. Race participants will be crossing at designated locations at varying times.
The City Clerk will be available on Saturday, August 3 at the City’s early voting site, located at Peter White Public Library from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for election related purposes including voter registration and issuance of absentee ballots. Voters also have the option to cast their ballot early at the City’s early voting site.
Sunday, August 4 is the last day of early voting statewide.
Due to the increase in the number of incidents in the Picnic Rocks area, the Marquette City Fire Department would like to remind all residents and visitors that it is prohibited to swim past the “No Swimming” signs and buoys or out to the Picnic Rocks. Doing so is a violation of Section 52-34. - Conduct on Beaches. This may result in a municipal civil infraction and is subject to enforcement procedures and penalties set forth in Section 52-37 of the Marquette City Code.
In recent days, the Marquette City Fire Department has made contact with several swimmers attempting to swim out to Picnic Rocks. The Picnic Rocks area is posted by signage and by buoys that state “No Swimming”
The Fire Department would like to also remind all watercraft that it is prohibited to operate within 200 yards of any designated city beach.
