The City of Marquette announces the Call for Artists for Art Stroll 2023, an incredible opportunity for local artists to showcase their artwork during the City of Marquette Art Week. Beginning June 19 through June 24, Art Week will celebrate the local arts scene, and Art Stroll will make a highly anticipated return after a hiatus due to COVID. The City Office of Arts & Culture, in partnership with the Marquette Downtown Development Authority, will connect local artists with businesses in the downtown area, transforming the district into a vibrant art gallery.

Art Week will feature the highlight event, Art Stroll, which will take place on Wednesday, June 21 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. During this event, artists are invited to host receptions, demonstrations, workshops, or pop-up displays of their work, creating an immersive and interactive experience for attendees. In addition to the Art Stroll Event, artwork will be displayed throughout the downtown district from Monday, June 19 to Saturday, June 24, during regular business hours of participating locations.

To be considered for participation, artists must submit their applications by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 5. The application should include the artist's contact information, a brief artist statement, a high-resolution image of the artwork, and any other relevant details. Submissions are welcomed from artists of all ages and mediums. Artwork must be family-friendly in content. City offices located at Marquette City Hall, 300 W. Baraga Avenue; the Lakeview Arena, 401 E. Fair Avenue; the Arts and Culture Center, 217 N. Front St. (in the Peter White Public Library); and the Municipal Service Center, 1100 Wright Street, will be closed on Monday, May 29, in observance of Memorial Day.  Marquette Police, Fire, and Public Works and Utilities will remain operational during this time.

There will be no change in garbage pickup for City residents.

The May 23 meeting of the Fire Police Pension Board has been rescheduled for May 30, 2023. Meetings are held in the Finance Conference room at 8:30 a.m. at City Hall, 300 West Baraga Ave., Marquette, MI 49855.

The City of Marquette’s official Park hours go into effect on Monday, May 22.  The city parks hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily.  There is no camping or overnight parking allowed in any city park.

As of Monday, May 22, the road around Presque Isle will be closed to vehicular traffic for walking hours on the following days and times:

• Monday and Wednesday:       6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
• Tuesday and Thursday:           7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
• Saturday and Sunday:             7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

On Friday, May 19, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Spring Street will be closed between Third Street and Fourth Street for tree removal work. The street is anticipated to be reopened at 6:00 p.m.

The public is advised to take caution when traveling through this area and to be alert for construction and advisory signing.   

The May 16 regular meeting of the Peter White Public Library Board of Trustees has been rescheduled to May 23 at 5:00 p.m.

Oberstar Inc. will be continuing demolition work at 214 South Front Street requiring sidewalk and street closures. The southbound lane of Front Street between Main Street and Spring Street will be closed to vehicular traffic during the day Monday, May 15. Southbound traffic will be detoured around the closure via Main Street, Third Street, and Baraga Avenue. Northbound traffic on Front Street will remain unaffected.

The public is advised to take caution when traveling through this area and to be alert for construction and advisory signing.

Beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, May 15, 2023, Smith Construction Inc. will be closing Lincoln Avenue between Bluff Street and Jefferson Street for sewer service replacement work.  A signed detour will be provided routing traffic around the closure via Bluff Street, Rublein Street, Ridge Street, McClellan Avenue, and Cleveland Avenue. The street is anticipated to be reopened on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. Residents within the closure area will receive information from Smith Construction regarding parking and driveway access.

This work is a part of the City’s annual Street Improvement Bituminous Paving and Lateral Replacement project and is a prerequisite for the resurfacing of the street. The public is urged to use extreme caution and follow all traffic control measures. Additional announcements will be made regarding the upcoming resurfacing activities.

The Presque Isle Park Advisory Committee (PIPAC) meeting scheduled for May 10, 2023 has been canceled due to lack of business.  The next regularly scheduled meeting will be June 14, 2023.

The Harbor Advisory Committee (HAC) meeting scheduled for May 9, 2023 has been canceled due to lack of agenda.  The next regularly scheduled meeting will be June 13, 2023.
