Dave Outinen has been promoted to the position of Special Equipment Operator/ Street Maintenance for the Public Works Department effective Aug. 17. Dave was hired as a Laborer with the Department of Public Works in October of 1990 and transferred to Water Distribution in September 1997 as a Heavy Equipment Operator. Dave has worked as a Special Equipment Operator in Water Distribution as well as a Utility Inspector for the City. He most recently held the position of Heavy Equipment Operator in the Street Maintenance Division of Public Works.

Dan Johnston, Promotion

Dan Johnston has been promoted to Supervisor, Wastewater Treatment Plant effective July 1, 2020. Dan was hired by the City in April 1998 as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator. Dan holds a bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan University in Technology and Applied Science with a minor in Electronics as well as B, C and D sewer treatment operator licenses through EGLE. Dan can be reached at extension 4018.

Kellen Wessels, Promotion

Kellen Wessels has been promoted to the position of Assistant City Engineer effective July 1, 2020. Kellen was hired by the City in May of 2018 as the Staff Engineer. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Madison with a bachelor’s degree in Geological Engineering/Geology and is a licensed professional engineer (P.E.). Kellen replaced Mik Kilpela who took over as City Engineer when Keith Whittington retired. Kellen can be reached at extension 8990.

Scrap Tire collection

The Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority (MCSWMA) has received a Scrap Tire Cleanup Grant from EGLE. They will be at the Compost/Rubbish site located at 1415 Pioneer Road August 13 from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. for collection.

All Marquette County residents may bring up to 10 tires at a time. Car and truck tires that are 22.5 inches in diameter or less (with or without rims) will be accepted at this collection. Larger tires, tractor tires and tires on split rims will NOT be accepted at this site. Please see the MCSWMA website www.mcswma.com for more information on disposing of these types of tires.

Due to Executive Order 2020-21, the July 20, 2020 LDFA meeting will be held virtually with Board Members and Staff attending remotely through Zoom video conferencing.

The meeting will be streamed on the City of Marquette YouTube channel starting at 4 p.m. The YouTube channel is located at www.youtube.com/user/CityofMarquetteGov. Please note that the livestream will have at least a 20 second delay.

Public Participation

There will be three options for public participation in these meetings: video conferencing, phone conferencing or written comment. There will be two public comment periods for each meeting, one at the beginning and one at the end. Comments will be limited to three minutes and speakers must give their name and address. Written comments will be limited to 500 words.

WorkShare Update

This is a notification that the last day of the WorkShare program will be Saturday, July 25 due to the expiration of the $600 per week CARES Act unemployment benefit after that date. This is in accordance with the agreement letter of understanding with the bargaining units.  At this point, there will not be any furloughs after July 25 and we will be canceling the WorkShare plan. You should not have to take any action and your hours will resume to their normal levels.
Federal legislation is a constantly evolving situation and, if the benefit does happen to be extended, the City will reevaluate our position at that time.

Marquette Public Art Commission Meeting
