Call to Artists - Art Week 2022 Cover Art Contest

The City of Marquette Office of Arts & Culture invites artists of all ages to submit their original, water-themed artwork to be featured on the cover of the Art Week event booklet. Art Week 2022 will be held June 20-25.

A public contest will be held to determine the artwork featured on the cover of the City of Marquette Art Week 2022 Booklet. Submission deadline is Friday April 22, 2022. All submissions will be uploaded as a virtual exhibit hosted on the MQTcompass.com website. The winning artist will receive a $100 artist stipend and featured prominently in the Art Week promotions. The winning artwork will be chosen by popular choice via a public online voting poll activated once all submissions are available for viewing. All submissions should be inspired by the Art Week 2022 theme: Water.

March 23 Alliance Reception Canceled Due to Inclement Weather

The U.P. Arts and Culture Alliance public reception has been canceled due to inclement weather. The UPACA Board Meeting and the Michigan Arts and Culture Council grant training workshop will proceed as planned. Public welcome and free to attend all events. Marquette Arts & Culture Office Closed for Staff Professional Development

MARQUETTE ARTS & CULTURE OFFICE CLOSED FOR STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Office of Arts & Culture will be closed Wednesday, March 23 for City staff professional development. Staff will be attending the U.P. Arts and Culture Alliance Board Meeting, the Michigan Arts and Culture Council grant training workshop, and the UPACA public reception all held at the Delta County Chamber of Commerce. The Arts & Culture staff will check the arts-culture@marquettemi.gov email periodically throughout the day for immediate needs and will respond to phone messages the following day, Thursday, March 24. The Deo Gallery and Studio Spaces will remain open according to Peter White Public Library hours.

Kids Cove Inclusive Playground Community Input Opportunities

The City of Marquette, Community Services Department and Marquette Playgrounds For All committee, invite the community to participate in several public input sessions the week of May 17, 2021.  Sessions will be hosted by Sanders & Czapski Associates and partners Progressive A&E and Let Kids Play.  The public is encouraged to attend any or all the following opportunities:

   12:30-2:30 pm    Meet the Team, Imagine a New Playground

On-Site at Kids Cove Playground, Mattson Park

Meet the design team, Marquette Playgrounds For All and City Staff.  This informal session will provide an opportunity for the community and the design team to begin to imagine a new playground at the park.

     5:30-7:30 pm     Inclusive Design Presentation

        Lakeview Arena – Russell Arena (or Zoom)**

Mara Kaplan of Let Kids Play will present the background of inclusive design and play specific to playgrounds.

   11:30-1:30 pm     Drop-In Design Day Workshop*

Poster examples of potential playground elements will be available and participants will vote for favorites using a cell phone app.

An interactive presentation and workshop on possible design aspects. Participants will vote for favorites using the cell phone app.  Middle school and high school students are welcome.

*  All participants in the Tuesday events are encouraged to bring a picture of children who will use the new playground.  These will be incorporated into a collage at the end of the project.

** COVID-19 safety protocols for events at Lakeview Arena will require all attendees wear a mask and maintain at least 6 feet of distance.  Attendees will be limited to 100 persons.  Additional participation will be available via Zoom (link at kidscovemqt.com) and the cell phone app.

Dec. 17 Harbor Advisory Committee Meeting Rescheduled: Participation Details

The City of Marquette Harbor Advisory Committee meeting scheduled for December 15 was cancelled due to lack of quorum.  The meeting is rescheduled for Thursday, December 17 at 5:15 PM.  This meeting will be held virtually with committee members and staff attending remotely through Zoom video conferencing.

Public Participation


There will be three options for public participation in this meeting: video conferencing, phone conferencing or written comment. There will be one public comment period during the meeting. Comments will be limited to three minutes and speakers must give their name and address. Written comments will be limited to 500 words.

When participating via video or phone conferencing, you will be placed into a virtual lobby/on-hold until the Public Comment portions of the meetings are reached. Once Public Comment begins, the Chair will go through each person waiting in the lobby one at a time and provide them with the opportunity to address the committee. The video and phone conference lobby will open 10 minutes before the scheduled meeting start time.

Garbage and Recycle Cart Delivery Update

The garbage and recycle cart fall order has been delayed. The manufacturer is estimating a new delivery time of the end of February. Carts will show up on your curb and price adjustments to your utility bill will be made after the delivery.
