Craig Marker, Retirement

Craig Marker, Patrol Officer in the Police Department, has been approved for a duty disability retirement by the Fire and Police Retirement System Board effective Dec. 27, 2018. Craig has an associate’s degree in Law Enforcement from Northern Michigan University and had worked as a police officer for the Brookings, South Dakota Police Department before being hired by the City in 1998. In addition to his duties as a Patrol Officer, Craig had served as the President of the Marquette Professional Police Association for the past few years.

Jonathan Braun, New Hire

Jonathan Braun has been hired as a Patrol Officer in the Police Department effective September 3rd. Jonathan has an associates degree in law enforcement from Northern Michigan University (NMU). He also obtained his MCOLES certification from NMU’s Police Academy in August of 2019. Prior to attending the Police Academy, he was a Sergeant in the Marine Corps for four years and he spent a year and a half as a Corrections Deputy at the Marquette County jail.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

The duties and responsibilities as well as the minimum qualifications are contained in the attached job description.  A Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Water Distribution System Operator Certification, S-4 level or above must be attained within 6 months of becoming eligible per DEQ requirements.  (See attached State of Michigan Requirements for Certification).

This position may include second and third shifts, and / or weekends, and will be available beginning October 21, 2019.

RATE OF PAY (includes hole rate)

Entry $20.23/hr, 6 months $21.45/hr, 1 yr $22.60/hr, 2 yrs $23.83/hr, 3 yrs $25.03/hr.

Chris Schroeder, Resignation

Christopher Schroeder, part-time Rental Code Inspector in the Fire Department has resigned effective August 8th. Chris is a licensed residential builder in Michigan. He worked in construction and owned his own business before being hired by the City on April 8th. Chris is leaving to accept a full-time position with another organization.

Michael Kohler, Retirement

Michael Kohler II, Captain of Detectives in the Marquette Police Department, is retiring effective Aug. 4, after more than 26 years of service. Mike has an associate’s degree in Applied Science/Police Administration from Kirtland Community College and was hired as a Marquette City Police Officer in September of 1992. Prior to starting with the department, he had worked part-time as a Patrol Officer for West Branch City and as a Deputy Sheriff-Road Patrol for Arenac County Sheriff’s Department. Mike was promoted to Detective Corporal in 2008, Detective Sergeant in 2009, Detective Lieutenant in 2014 and Captain of Detectives in 2015. Mike’s last day in the office is July 25. A retirement party in his honor will be held in the Commission Chambers from 1-3 p.m. on July 25th.

James Tregear, Heavy Equipment Operator, has successfully posted to the position of Arborist/Heavy Equipment Operator in the Facilities and Maintenance Department effective July 22. Jim was hired as a Equipment Mechanic/Apprentice in 2010 in Motor Pool. He transferred to the position of Heavy Equipment Operator in 2015 and then transferred to Forestry in 2016. In addition to his three years of experience in Forestry, Jim is also an ISA certified Arborist. Jim is replacing Dan Carter who was promoted to Supervisor-Arborist/Sexton in June.

Lauri Anderson was hired as a Homemaker Aide on July 17th. Lauri has a culinary certificate from the Jacobetti Center and worked a year in housekeeping for UPHS and for two years as dietary aide for Mill Creek Assisted Living before being hired by the City.
