Art Week 2023 Events Announced

The City of Marquette proudly presents the 2023 City of Marquette Art Week, June 19 to June 24. This annual event brings together local artists, organizations, and businesses for a week-long celebration of arts and culture. All events are FREE and FAMILY FRIENDLY. This year, the Art Week theme is "Home," which draws inspiration from the ongoing Community Master Plan Update in the City of Marquette. The success of Art Week is made possible through collaboration with over 200 local artists, businesses, organizations, and community partners, and it receives generous support from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council.

Throughout the week, Art Week projects and events will explore the community's concept of "Home" and how arts and culture can help envision our future. The events will be held at various locations across the city, activating different neighborhoods and community spaces. Art Week features a range of highlighted events including an opening sunrise ceremony, the annual children's plein air painting at Lighthouse Park, musical performances and dancing at Hurley Park Ballfield, the Presque Isle Artist Market, the annual Fresh Coast Plein Air Painting Festival, performances by the Marquette City Band and local folk bands, children's art activities hosted by Liberty Children's Art Project, the Downtown Art Stroll and Wednesday Artist Market on Washington St. organized in partnership with the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), the Paint the Town with Love sidewalk chalk festival by the UP Children's Museum, Cultural Conversations facilitated by local community leaders, and a Closing Concert by MSO Summer Strings featuring local composers and pieces inspired by Marquette. Additionally, the week will offer numerous popup artist demos, workshops, music performances, installations, and exhibits.

Pick up an Art Week magazine at the Marquette Arts & Culture Center, City Hall, Travel Marquette, or the DDA.

The regular meeting of the City of Marquette Brownfield Redevelopment Authority Board has been cancelled for June 15, 2023  due to a lack of quorum. The meetings are held at 8:00 a.m. at the Municipal Service Center, 1100 Wright Street, Marquette, MI. 49855 on the third Thursday of each month.

City Master Plan Community Workshops - Additional Date Added

The City of Marquette is hosting two Master Plan workshops to gather the community’s ideas related to these potential redevelopment sites: the Marquette Mall (2025 US Hwy 41), the area around Tadych’s Marketplace, the Washington Street Corridor from US-41 to 3rd Street, the area west of Lake Shore Boulevard from E. Ridge Street to E. Fair Avenue, and the South Marquette commercial area along US-41 from Shiras Drive to Genesee Street.

The workshops will be held at Lakeview Arena (401 E. Fair Avenue) on June 14 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and June 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The June 15 morning workshop is new and was added by the City, due to community interest in this topic.

The City’s consultant team is requesting that interested individuals register for the workshops so that the team can ensure adequate space and supplies at the event. The June 14 workshop is nearly full, so the City encourages community members to register for the June 15 workshop that was recently added. RSVP for the workshops by visiting the project website at www.marquettemasterplan.org.

All registered participants will receive a pre-meeting packet with more details about each potential redevelopment site and some questions to get folks thinking about what is possible at each location.

“These redevelopment sites were identified as a result of the public input and their future success is critical to the fabric of our community,” says Dennis Stachewicz, Director of Community Development. “We look forward to exploring with workshop participants their vision for these sites and how they could change and connect to surrounding areas of our city.”

Beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, Smith Construction Inc. will be closing Fourth Street between Washington Street and Arch Street to remove and replace sections of curb. This work is a prerequisite for the resurfacing of these streets. The public is urged to use extreme caution and follow all traffic control measures. Additional announcements will be made regarding the upcoming resurfacing activities.
