City of Marquette Offices Closed for Good Friday

City offices located at Marquette City Hall, 300 W. Baraga Avenue; the Lakeview Arena, 401 E. Fair Avenue; the Arts and Culture Center, 217 N. Front St. (in the Peter White Public Library); and the Municipal Service Center, 1100 Wright Street, will be closed on Friday, April 15, in observance of Good Friday.  Marquette Police, Fire, and Public Works and Utilities will remain operational during this time. 

There will be no change in garbage pickup for City residents.

Marquette City Hall - Signs of Spring Exhibit

The City of Marquette Office of Arts & Culture presents Signs of Spring, a new community art exhibit in City Hall. Signs of Spring features artwork by new, emerging, and professional local artists inspired by the Blue Spotted Salamander and other subtle signs of spring. The community is invited to vote for your favorite. Awards for Popular Vote, City Manager’s Choice and First Place will be presented at a City Commission meeting in May. The exhibit will be on display from April 1 through June 10 and is open to the public during normal business hours, Monday-Friday from 7:30am-4:30pm. City Hall is located at 300 West Baraga Avenue.

Signs of Spring is part of Salamander Days, an awareness campaign presented by the City of Marquette, Superior Watershed Partnership, and other local organizations and individuals in the Marquette community supporting the migration of the Blue Spotted Salamander on Presque Isle Park. In addition to the exhibit, a variety of themed arts and science programming will be presented by partners throughout the month of April. Seasonal Launch Permits

Beginning March 15, the City of Marquette will require all boaters to obtain a launch permit to launch a boat at either Cinder Pond or Presque Isle Marina.

Seasonal launch permits are available for purchase at Lakeview Arena Parks & Recreation office, located at 401 E. Fair Avenue, the City of Marquette’s Treasurer’s office located at 300 W. Baraga Avenue.  Seasonal launch permits will also be available at Cinder Pond Marina office beginning May 9.  The cost is $60.00 per seasonal launch permit, and $15.00 for an additional launch permit (restrictions apply).

Daily launch permits are $6.00 and are available in the red launch boxes located at Cinder Pond and Presque Isle Marina.

Planning Commission Meeting Canceled; Joint Work Session Scheduled

The Marquette City Planning Commission meeting scheduled for March 15, has been canceled due to lack of business for the agenda. The Marquette City Commission and the Planning Commission will conduct a joint work session on the same date beginning at 5:30 PM in the first-floor conference room of the Municipal Service Center, located at 1100 Wright Street. The Planning Commission will present its annual report to the City Commission at this meeting, in addition to discussing community planning concerns for this year and beyond.

Marquette Public Art Commission Meeting

The Marquette Public Art Commission will hold its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 9 at 6:30 p.m. This meeting will be in-person in the City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center, 217 N. Front Street, Marquette.

Public Participation

There will be one public comment period for the meeting, at the beginning of the agenda. Comments are limited to three minutes and speakers must give their name and address before speaking. Written comments will be presented to the board during the meeting and can be submitted by emailing tmorin@marquettemi.gov. Written submissions will be accepted until 5pm on Wednesday, March 9.

March DDA Meeting Announcement

A regular meeting of the Marquette Downtown Development Authority Board of Directors will be held Thursday, March 10, at the Marquette Commons, 112 South Third Street. The meeting will begin at 8:00 a.m.

Public Participation

There will be two options for public participation in this meeting: in person or written. Written comments can be submitted by emailing Becky@downtownmarquette.org. Written submissions will be accepted until 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9.

Call for Artists – Chair With A View, A Community Art Project

Lake Superior Art Association is seeking 24 local artists to design and paint an Adirondack chair as a part of Chair with a View, a community art project in conjunction with Art Week 2022.  Chairs will be installed during Art Week, June 20-25, along the City’s waterfront and displayed throughout the summer. All designs must reflect this year’s theme of water. Designs will be selected by a blind jury on both creativity and originality.  All artists must reside within Marquette County. Artists under the age of 18, must receive permission from a parent or guardian. Artists are required to submit an original design and brief description by March 18.
