Promotional fund, discount fee waiver applications available

The Marquette City Code (Sec. 2-522) provides a mechanism for community stakeholders to submit for waivers of City fees and/or in-kind services provided by the City and/or cash payments. Requests for Promotional Funds may include grant funding, fee relief, provision of in-kind City services, cash or a combination of any or all of these items.

Applications for Fiscal Year 2020-2021 (Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021) must be received or postmarked by March 31, 2020. Any applications received or postmarked after this date will NOT be eligible for consideration. It is important to note all applications may not be funded. Funding will depend upon City priorities and available dollars.Applications and information are available on the City website at www.marquettemi.gov or at the Community Services, Parks & Recreation office, located in Lakeview Arena at 401 E. Fair Avenue in Marquette.

Christmas tree drop-off sites

Properties paying the “Solid Waste” fee on their monthly bills are eligible to use the Christmas tree drop-off sites.  Owners and tenants of properties not paying the fee should contact their regular waste hauler for service.  These sites are supported by fees, not taxes.

Beginning December 26, 2019 through January 13, 2020 there will be two (2) drop-off sites available for Christmas tree disposal.

Site one is located at the west end of Lakeview Arena parking lot, 401 E Fair Ave. Place tree inside orange fencing.

Site two is located at Hurley Field, 240 Mesnard St. Place tree inside orange fencing.

Residents are to remove all decorations and stands before disposing of their tree.

New Year’s Eve ball drop

Beginning on Tuesday, Dec. 31 at 11 p.m. and continuing until 1 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2020, West Washington Street will be closed between Front Street and Third Street, to accommodate for the annual New Year’s Eve Ball Drop.

The motoring public is advised to use caution when traveling near this area and be aware of all pedestrians crossing the streets.

Arts and Culture Advisory Committee special meeting

The City of Marquette Arts and Culture Advisory Committee will hold a special meeting Thursday, Dec. 12, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. The Special Meeting is to review the 2020 Annual Art Award nominations and select recipients. All meetings take place in the City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center located in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library.

December Board of Review planned

NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING

Notice is hereby given that the Board of Review, City of Marquette will meet on Dec. 10 at 9 a.m. at City Hall, Council Chambers, 300 W. Baraga Ave, Marquette, MI for the following purposes.

  1. An owner of property that is a “Principal Residence” on May 1 may appeal to the July Board of Review in the year for which an exemption was claimed or in the immediate succeeding 3 years if the exemption was not on the tax roll.  For taxes levied after Dec. 31, 2011, an owner who owned and occupied a principal residence on June 1 or Nov. 1 for which the exemption was not on the tax roll may file an appeal with the July or December Board of Review in the year for which the exemption was claimed or in the immediate succeeding three years if the exemption was not on the tax roll. MCL 211.7cc(19)
  2. Request for current year only for poverty exemptions, but not poverty exemptions denied by the March Board of Review.
  3. Request for P.A. 161 of 2013 Disabled Veterans Exemption.
  4. Correct clerical errors or mutual mistake of facts.

All required forms and documentation shall be received five days prior to said meeting.

City Manager offers community office hours

Marquette City Manager Mike Angeli will hold his next community office hours on Wednesday, December 11, from 10 a.m. to noon in the main floor conference room of the Peter White Public Library. The meeting is intended to provide an informal opportunity to discuss issues within the community, and to give citizens the opportunity for direct dialogue with City staff about interests and concerns.

Holiday Parade

Beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, the Marquette Downtown Development Authority will be hosting the annual Holiday Parade. The parade will start at the Berry Events Center parking lot and exit on to Pine Street. The parade will proceed south on Pine to Fair Avenue, then west on Fair to Third Street, then south on Third to its conclusion at Third and Baraga Avenue.

The following street will be closed to all traffic from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m:

  • Third Street from Bluff Street to Spring Street.

The following streets will be closed to through traffic from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m:

  • Washington Street from Front Street to Third Street
  • Washington Street from Third Street to Fourth Street
  • Main Street from Front Street to Third Street
  • Jackson Cut Alley from Fourth Street to Main Street
  • Bluff Street Alley from Front Street to Third Street

The streets will re-open upon conclusion of the parade at approximately 7:30 p.m.
